Which country has the most annoying fanbase?

For Slovaks, I generally think on this site we are pretty open to criticism of our national team and prospects. No one is more critical of our own teams than us as well. Although we have certainly hyped prospects in the past that haven’t panned out, I think generally most of us compare prospect development in Slovakia against Slovakia of the past rather than top nations. Also most of the Slovak posters here seem to regularly interact with other nations fans on their teams and prospects in a pretty respectful way and compliment them lots. On some other sites, you will find either more delusional fans but also a lot more negative fans. Constant complaining is a theme.

I actually find Canadian and American fans to be the most welcoming outside of Czech fans, who may give us some jabs but it’s all in good spirit. From the big dogs both Canadian and American fans generally don’t say anything negative when they are up big on smaller nations. Even when Slovak fans booed Canada anthem a few WC’s ago, many Canadian fans acknowledged that this wasn’t indicative of us as hosts.

Most annoying is Russian fans in my opinion.

Tough call, they all have a terrible segment of posters when they are losing and each one has their own particular M.O.

Canadians: It's our game, if only we had all our best players here, we're the best always and forever................bow at our feet.

U.S: we don't take this game seriously and if we did we would rule the world in this as in everything else, consider yourself lucky you peons.

Finland: Count your blessings we are so small or none of you would have a chance, over the top winter war references, prospect thread invasions on a level the likes you have never seen when a player is perceived to be in competition with one of their own.

Russia: we lost therefore you must have cheated somehow, the whole world is against us, the evil western world is out to destroy Russian hockey and eradicate it from the roots up.

Sweden: The refs are killing us, especially those Canadian ones, why are we always getting ripped off? Those Canadians, those god damned Canadians, they are always looking to hurt our players.

Czechs are Slovaks are usually quite fine around here but then they don't have much to cheer about or be disappointed about these days, expectations are very low. But don't let that fool you, if they were still very good they would be a pain in the ass too and I can attest to this from experiencing them in their halcyon days on the old IIHF chat boards during the world championships before they were unceremoniously shut down due to all the foolishness.

I find us Finns pretty annoying - ihe main reason is the eternal pessimism and badmouthing of our team and our chances, mostly as regards the World Championships. Still, Canadian eternal bragging in the international context is even worse. It doesn't matter one iota about your H-team and your Y-team. Bloody hell, you can only send ONE team

I have to say Czechboy is probably the classiest poster on this forum. However - and I'm not trying to be insulting - it's easier to be likeable when your team isn't doing that well. We'll see if the likeability remains once the Czechs have improved again.

The most annoying has to be the guy who writes essays on this forum about how certain tournaments are crooked to make certain teams win, the most courteous is probably the Czech one or the German flag guy

Yes us Finns definitely. In the olden days it was this annoying losing mentality, "They will lose", "Why are you even watching, I can guarantee they'll lose". Plenty of countries lose more of than not.

Then somewhere after couple of olympic medals, the second world championship and wjc wins, the tide started turning and it quickly went way over. I think growing up with bunch of disappointments, early playoff exists and silver medals, into finally winning some made bunch of people a bit arrogant.

Most finns are pretty nationalistic, even though we mostly consume products made elsewhere, entertainment, electronics, cars etc. The media also likes to highlight every little thing we do outside borders, some US late night host mentions something finnish gets into the news (well tabloids and online sites, but still). Again I think it's a result of 80 years of nobody giving a f*** or even knowing where Finland is.

I also want to hand a dishonorable mention to Norwegian fans. Not hockey fans in particular, but rather winter sports fans, which is almost every Norwegian.

Unfortunately, I was living and working in Oslo during the 2010 Winter Olympics and it’s just a nightmarish experience. You realize how much the Winter Olympics simply are a festival celebrating niche Norwegian interests, and a two week national circle jerk I was caught in the middle of.

Each morning clocking in at work the Norwegians confronted me with some smug “congratulations on the singular gold/silver/bronze, we won five”, I didn’t even f***ing know because no one cares in the rest of the entire world, did you see the hockey game or not? Your team actually put up a fight against Sweden in a sport more than two countries are competitive in, you should pat yourselves on the back for that instead of trying to signify the Nordic Combined to me.

I thankfully had a nice refuge from the national psychosis in my neighborhood sports pub run by a Cape Verdean named Orlando. He was on vacation but had instructed the personnel that there’s a hard no to everyone requesting them showing the winter games. More than one lusekofte decorated, luve wearing jerkass lost their shit and went into a screaming falsetto at the poor barkeep, but they stood their ground on behalf of Orlando and his soccer loving patrons.

We're not even in this year's WJC or the Olympics -- which is a travesty in itself -- and still you kick us when we're down! Not that I really disagree with anything you said right there, but still! And yeah, maybe we have to overcompensate for our lack of a decent hockey team (which, really, is all that should matter since hockey is better than any other sport) by bragging about winning in other really cool winter sports like Nordic Combined and skiing for 5,000,000 kilometers (which I'm pretty sure at least three other countries are competitive in, not just two!)! And yes, maybe it's really, really, really annoying for hockey fans here that nobody seems to care about hockey and would rather watch an easily predicted and boring Norwegian medal sweep in some skiing event than the greatness that is Olympic hockey, but still!

Just you wait, Hedgehog, until the time in like 2086 when Norway finally ices a hockey team that beats Sweden! Then guess who's going to @ you in the game day thread! Then you'll wish you'd been a little less rude to your neighbor! Orlando won't be there to save you then!

Now, if you don't mind you've gotten me all mad, so I'm going to have to find some Nordic Combined to watch, convince myself that it is not only really, really, really important but also cool, put on my lue and ullgenser, and scream at the TV in my falsetto voice

A good point. Mind you, it could be a very long time before we're that good If it does happen, I'd be more in shock and joy to even dream about rubbing it in.

Well, if you want some negativity.. Antos said today that the Czech Juniors won't make the Semi's. Our crossover is US, Russia or Sweden. If that doesn't depress you then I don't know what will.lol

I don't know much about the team this year but we never beat the US. So Russia and Sweden would improve our chances a little although I suspect we'd still lose.

Haha! I’m glad both (all?) the Norwegians on Hfboards were good sports about my tirade. While it was sincere (I did really, really hate working in Oslo during the Olympics: I know that beating us in cross country skiing only can compete with the feeling of tying England or Brazil in football for you guys, but come on, I wouldn’t go tell you the score in floorball or some other shit you may be excused for not knowing you even had a national team in, and especially not before you’ve had a chance to drink your morning coffee!!!), there are no hard feelings remaining once we can forget about the medal count.

Cheers on picking up the reference on my name, you’re the first on the boards as far as I’m aware, but it figures that the rare yet proud Norwegian hockey aficionado would also be well versed in other fine arts, including the works of Russian master of animation, Yuri Norstein. You may have just googled it, but nevertheless.

Ah yes, the 5,000,000 km of course, the great equalizer, but it’s rather the exception to prove the rule. The Seal Throw and the 4x300m Wool Knitting Relay are much more representative of the Winter Olympics and you know damn well.

In seriousness though: I’m really, really looking forward to seeing Team Norway’s resurgence, and while I never root for the opposing team, I could still appreciate the historic win by Team Denmark over Sweden in the World Championships. I want the game to expand.

Was kind of saddened by seeing people project Norway’s 2022 roster (in case China’s berth as hosts would have been withdrawn), and still seeing much of the same names — now pushing 40 — who gave Sweden a run for the money in 2010, sprinkled with a few familiar faces from the SHL and a couple of young longshots to making an NHL roster. I hope it’s just a brief valley of a generational shift, and that we won’t have to wait until I’m dead before Norway’s back on the hockey horse competing for glory!

Goes without saying that every fanbase has annoying fans.

But Canada should be #1 by default, sheer volume they probably have more annoying fans than all other countries has total hockey fans. And when they come in masses everything becomes much worse.
Shout out to Finland though, they deserve to be mentioned as well. But will still always for them vs everyone but Sweden (and sometimes Switzerland)
