I think every HF Ranger fan had Cherapanov penciled in on the first line but for obvious and unfortunate reasons I believe he doesn't qualify for this discussion.

For me personally, it's Grachev, and not necessarily because of his "top end" ceiling. I thought his realistic, achievable, ceiling was a Nik Antropov type and his basement was an Evgeny Artyukhin. Obviously, that didn't come to fruition, hopefully Fogarty becomes an NHL'er.

Erixon without a doubt. I was on the hype train and Pierre's reassurance magnified that.

Going back to my younger days, I thought Jarkko Immonen would be a legitimate top 6 forward. We all know how that ended up. Guy couldn't skate.

Sangs. We kind of ruined him too. All everyone was talking about with him was defense, defense, defense. Just go out and at defense. We were on him in juniors. In HFD.

Then all of a sudden he had no offense... We should have told him to just go out and play his game. The rest will come. It was obvious that we had changed approach with MDZ some.

I also thought/think that Erixon can become a decent player on this team. BUT he is definitely not a Torts type of player, and need a little luck with environment. I would lie if I didn't say that I think he had been a success by now had he played for like Det or Ana or a team like that.

Brendl, then Grachev.

Kind of unrelated I guess but the Prucha trade and then suck hurt alot.

Grachev, with Sanguinetti 2nd. If both players had developed as advertised, two of the bigger holes on this team would have been filled- top 6 LW and right-handed PMD.

busted:

Dan Blackburn = heartbroken. He was the real deal and made the Richter early retirement much more palatable. What a string of bad luck we had in goal early 2000's. Richter hurt, Blackburn hurt, Montoya hurt then released.

traded/busted:

MDZ. I consider him a bust for us. Those first 20 games his rookie year gave everyone in NY that giddy new toy feeling. In reality, he came back down to earth the rest of his tenure. I think what you see is what you get from him from now on with a Allstar flirt maybe 2-3x the rest of his career.

the things that Grachev was doing with his size and skating had me hooked.

I thought for sure we had a steal in the 3rd round.

NOT

Hands down Grachev. And if we're "counting" Cherepanov :( :( That is so sad, ****, it still pissed me off.

Sangs with the honorable mention.

The Montoya trade was a disappointing return.

On seeing this I immediately thought of Tomas Kloucek. That guy looked like he was really going to be something and he could really hit.

As far as the list Sanguinetti I suppose.

A note on Montoya--he hasn't had much of an NHL career but he is still an NHL player and believe it or not his NHL winning % is really good. Last I looked 30 + wins and low 20's in losses. He's not played with great teams either.

Just looked it up Montoya's career W-L-OT is 33W-22L-12OTL. He's 9-4-1 in Winnipeg this year.

Grachev all the way. Given our dearth of talent at RW, there was so much riding on his development. I still think that if he panned out we don't do both the Gaborik signing and the Nash trade. Maybe one, but definitely not both.

I had high hopes for both Sangs and Montoya and was disappointed when they didn't pan out. I always had my reservations about Grachev so I wasn't totally surprised when he busted out.

Earlier on, I had hopes that at least one of Dube, Vorobiev, or Goneau would work out. And I really liked all the "Johans" we drafted (Lindbom, Witehall, Holmqvist). The late 90s were some rough times...

1) Pavel Brendl
2) Geno Grachev
3) Bobby Sanguinetti
4) Antoine Lafleur
5) Christian Thomas
6) Tim Erixon (not sure he is to be considered a bust yet)
7) Ethan Werek (jerk)
8)Tomas Kundratek (bad trade nontheless)
9) Marc Andre Cliche

Hurt losing them especially as they left us for low value as our GM is a lousy magician
MDZ
Al Montoya
Prucha Time
Lauri Korpikoski
Nigel Dawes

Cherepenov (RIP) hurts too. Almost the most
Along with Dan Blackburn of course

Erixon out of that list, was pretty sure he was a sure fire NHLer with top 4 upside.

I remember someone here suggesting that Grachev wasn't riding Hodgson/Duchene's coattails, but that they were riding Grachev's coattails.
