Which 5 players have the best shot at breaking the next careers goals record?

McDavid has played 10 seasons. Even if you double his goals he's not close. I know he had 60+ goals in 1 season, but I don't see it happening enough for him to be in the conversation.

Nobody who is currently in the league, no chance none.

It will be broken at some point, but who knows how long it will take.

Assuming no major rule changes (ie nets are now eight feet wide), I'd estimate Matthews has a 5% chance of breaking the record. Everyone else would be negligible (1% or less).

I voted Mathew’s amongst other players but I think it’s more likely his career is short due to injuries.

id say matthews but really none. consistency is the key and none of these guys broke 50 goals their rookie season. ovi was so consistent for so long. none of these guys have shown that outside maybe matthews but he is more imjury prone

Picked Matthews as the only realistic option, but I don’t think he has the consistency and durability required to get there. The player who will beat Ovechkin’s record might not even be born yet.

Matthews is currently the only active player with a chance but doesn’t have the durability to produce at the same level as Ovi well into his 30s

Matthews, Draisaitl, McDavid. Probably in that order, too.

But, frankly, whoever has the best chance is a meaningless discussion when the chance of each of them is pretty much 0.

As far as the poll goes, only Matthews has a very small chance. But he already missed more games than Ovechkin in his prime. Ovechkin missed 31 games for his first 15 seasons, injuries or otherwise. Realistically, Matthews has no chance unless he pots 2-3 more 60 goal seasons, cause his body won't hold up. Every other player has 0, and I mean 0 chance. Legit no argument whatsoever

Matthews currently averages 52 goals per 82 games and 44 goals per season. If he somehow kept that pace up for the rest of his career and played for 20 seasons, he would end up in the high 800s. But there’s two problems with that. First, expecting his game (or anyone’s for that matter) to age like Ovechkin’s has is unrealistic. Second, Ovechkin isn’t done yet, and could very well end up in the mid 900s. I don’t want to say that any record is unbreakable, but I think this one is going to stand for many decades.

Only Matthews has a chance and that's almost a Hail Mary sort of chance.

I don't think the guy who can get to 900 career goals is in the league yet.

I think op is asking who has the best chance to break their own career high in goals. Thats the only way the options makes sense

Agreed. 700-750 goals would be a huge success for him. His overall numbers to watch out for are second in assists and points to Gretzky (1300+ assists, 2000+ points), not the still unknown goals record.
