They would trade it for Rossi or Perfetti if they are available, in whatever package makes the money worth.

The best way to use this pick is to have it help the present quickly and also the future.

Either player thinks the game at or even higher than Stutzle and we need that dynamic . And the chances we draft a player better than them with the future pick is slim.

Staois walked around the question but ended by saying "highly likely that we keep our pick."

Also, "we have good scouts".
More importantly, he said "I know what we're going to do with it. I don't know if I want to reveal it to you guys right now"

Sounds to me like a trade, but who knows with Steve!

I believe they have to make the decision 24 hours after the draft lottery, so basically by end of day tomorrow. I doubt he's referring to a trade happening between now and then.

Well gotta have faith we finish in a similar spot or better next year. If not and we forfeit the pick there will have to be a major change in that office. Likely hire a GM or something I don’t know

Guess we’ll see. Hopefully Bettman is willing to reduce the punishment to 32nd overall or something and we get to pick next year too.

At least this draft will be more interesting. Scouts need to find a high upside forward with it.

More that he would keep because he has sketched out a deal with a team already re: Ullmark and Boston at last year's deadline

Believing in the process and understanding that the team is still developing is not a fire able offense. Especially when it gives the sens an extra year to battle for keeping the pick or a reduced sentence. Staios has done a masterful job managing a very bad situation when it comes to a team that missed the playoffs for 7 straight seasons. Who had a bottom 3 prospect pool, was filled with bad contracts, pressed against the cap and had this pick forfeiting situation looming. He somehow insulated the roster, added veterans dumped contracts and got the team into the playoffs at 97 points. If you think he is getting fired after what he has accomplished thus far you are dreaming.

This team isnt going to be worst next year. They arent losing anyone important, all the younger players are going to be a year older and we actually have a good GM who has his pulse on the team and knows what to do. To improve it. All the pundits on the board ripping him this season for Green, Perron, Amadio etc etc etc. Have no humility. Its wild.

Having a good season and failing to meet expectations happens literally every year to at least one team in the NHL. It wouldn't be a rare occurrence at all if we finish bottom 10 next year, especially with our division and how much more cap space and upcoming players the other teams in it have.

Don’t think ur getting what I am saying. In the worst case scenario if Ottawa missed and this pick becomes too 10 and bettman doesn’t budge. There 100% needs to be repercussions. Hiring a GM doesn’t mean fire Staios as he would stay POHO

I really hope that this does not come back to bite us in the ass. It's an unfortunate position that the moron who preceded him put him in, but this is something that could leave a massive black mark on Staios' tenure if next season not only does not go to plan, but goes completely sideways.

That's not happening. The NHL giving the Senators a break is a complete pipe dream.

This team isn't deep enough to be confident that there's no chance the team is worse next year. A couple of key injuries and they can easily be a lottery team. It's not likely but it is possible.

It would be a very rare occurrence for a team that has the make up of the sens when literally all the teams best players are not in their prime yet save Batherson and Chabot.

They had a slow start last year because they brought in a new coaching staff that had a new system that demanded that the majority of this team changed the way they played all together. They had what 7/8 new players? Once this team found its groove it was easily a top 10 team the rest of the way and they battled alot of injuries.

This wont be a regression year next year. Literally nothing points to that.

They arent going to have Hamonic in the lineup at all. They are going to have Merelainen all season.

Staios will add and make this team better than last year there is no doubt in my mind. Why would people doubt him? Thats my point nothing has suggested anyone on here knows this team better or had better solutions that were realistic. Getting out from Norris and Korpisalo's deals while improving in those positions is truly incredible. Every single thing people criticized were dead wrong ESPECIALLY Travis Green.

You dont know the bolded and there is already a precedent. As well as common sense that can be applied here.

Well you guys were all wrong before ripping on Staios's decisions. I thought they were well thought out and incredibly executed. I was always and advocate for keeping the pick and looks like Staios and my views align again. So I will stay on this path thanks. I also just articulated at the top of this post why this team wont be regressing.

That begs a look at the Atlantic coming into next year:

Panthers: contender

Lightning: likely playoffs but due for regression

Leafs: playoffs unless they choke next round then likely big roster changes that out their projection into question

Habs: on the rise. Likely our direct competition for a spot again

Bruins: rebuild

Wings: probably 1-2 years from playoffs

Sabres: lol.

There's a definite path for us to continue to make the playoffs for a while simply due to where teams are at. Lightning are like the recent Bruins to me - performing well but due to a sharp drop off at any time.

IMO keeping the pick this year would be a bad decision even if we had the smartest GM in the league. Regression, bad seasons, and injuries are thinks that happen to all types of teams.

If we were Florida I'd also give up the 19th pick in a meh draft too.

Well people didn’t want to keep the pick in 2018 either because we could have picked higher in 2019. It all worked out and we wouldn’t have Tkachuk if we’d chosen otherwise.

I really don’t think the pick is going to be all that much different. If you asked me I’d probably just forfeit it to mitigate any risk but I also don’t think this is a big deal.

With Andlauer constantly bringing up some “forgiveness” they may also have information we don’t have.

I think the main problem is anything can happen next year. Right now, we have certainty of where the 2025 is, and the quality of prospects we can expect at that range in this draft.

Gambling next years pick is gambling on the unknown.

Personally, I just want to get the punishment over with and move on. And the punishment is not getting reduced...we need to stop hoping for that. It's not going to happen. I don't want to hold my breath every time a key player gets hit next year or when we lose a game or two in a row.

I can see any team in the Atlantic having good years next season.

It really doesn’t make sense unless there’s a corresponding move. Supposedly next year’s draft is quite a bit stronger. Drafting 32nd next year would likely be roughly the same value as 21st this year. You’re taking on an enormous amount of risk for, at best, getting an equal prospect a year earlier. Really poor decision.

We were drafting 4th overall regardless, obviously you're going to keep the pick. 4th overall was the likeliest place you'd draft when you finished last in the league in that era.
