I don't think it's official until a day before the draft? It sounds like they're keeping it this year....but things can still change between now and draft day.

I thought we had to notify the NHL of our preference within a day following the draft lottery (which is May 5th or 6th according to TSN).

I don't think it there is convincing involved. I get the impression that they do things as a management group.
Andlauer is still pissed about the penalty. He sounds like he wants to delay and continue to fight. It’s a dumb idea so hopefully he can be convinced to just give it up this year.

So I'd like to swing a deal with Pittsburgh that includes the return of our 3rd.

Sign Knies to an RFA offer sheet at the max of what requires a 1st and 3rd to compensate.

B. Tkachuk and Knies as our top 6 LW's would be...very nice.
That would be 6.71 plus a slight increase for 2025.

Leafs would just match.

I would've thought this was Staios' decision, not Andlauers. Although of course the whole mgmt team will be in on it, it would surely be SS that will make the decision?

It is. Andlauer already stated as such. This is from NYT article posted five days ago...

(Senators owner Michael Andlauer talks draft-pick penalty, playoff preparations)

“You’ve got to look at draft classes, as well,” Andlauer said. “If we’re Stanley Cup finalists, then we’re picking second last or last. So, we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. But looking at the draft class, looking at where we would pick today, I don’t know if it would be 17th or 18th, something in that area, sitting down with amateur scouts and seeing what’s coming up (in) next year’s draft class, as well. It’s so hard.

Ultimately, it’ll be Steve’s decision and he’ll say this is what (it is). But I would probably lean towards the fact that we’re going to keep our first-round pick this year. You’ve got to feel that we’re only going to get better, and therefore the first pick can become less valuable.”

And this exactly how it should. Owner can say whatever he wants, but let the GM do his job, for better or worse, disagreement or not.

I think the $25 000 fine and why nobody on Ottawa said anything about it is because it’s the league coming down hard on Ottawa now, because after the playoffs they will announce they aren’t making them forfeit a 1st and will reduce the punishment - the $25 000 fine is meant to be sound severe because the league is about to give Ottawa a huge break

Lol, are you kidding me? This got the team a 25000 fine and Cousins a max fine?

I had assumed he wired one at him when they said the were investigating an incident,

That would be amazing...but I wouldn't bank on it. Not after Arizona lost their first a few years ago. I doubt they'd go back on it now.

IMO, the ‘25 mid 1st round pick likely won’t improve the team in the next year or two.

By giving up this years pick, the team can leverage the ‘26 pick at the trade deadline if they feel they improved vs this year. You can get some good players for a playoff run with a 1st in ‘26. If they’re playing worse, then just keep the pick which would be better than this year anyway.
This is common sense if they try to galaxy brain this and it backfires heads need to roll

If we keep this years pick, I hope we select the most talented forward available. Perron and Giroux will be out of the picture after next year and that first round pick this year will have an opportunity to earn a spot on our meh top 6 wings.

Every year it's a draft lottery because you don't know what you're going to get. However, I have to say that I am pretty sour on this year's draft. That's just me, but I'm about as excited as watching paint dry.

I think picking a player this year is really forcing it unless there is a guy they really are in love with. I say forget about it and let's move on.

I don't foresee anybody cracking this line up for 3 to 4 years that gets drafted this year. Unless we're talking about the high upside defenseman or an elite goal scorer.

Get on with it and forget about the Dorian mistake and move forward. No need for our new owner to make noise over the past regimes mistakes. Thanks. I don't even want to talk about it anymore, it's annoying is but I think if Bettman was going to be cool about it, He would have by now.

Agreed, it'd be nice to just pay the price this year and get it over with. Then it's done.

Get 'er done! And/or trade our 2025 or 2026 draft pick (other team's choice) plus other assets to get either a fast 1st line winger to play with Stutzle, or a big physical RD, or a big physical 4th line C.

Not because he is a pretty good player & they could use a C with size down the middle to fight off the big centres in the league?
I want a 4th line C who can play a solid 200 foot defensive game (defensive specialist) in road games where the other team tries to play their 1st or 2nd line against our 4th line. If he is big, tough and physical too, great!

Michael McCaron C/RW fits the bill, also plays PK, good at faceoffs, hits, fights & adds some offence & is cheap at $.900K.
