What kind of player is he now? Can he play the offside? Leafs always looking to upgrade D

99% chance Francis couldn’t get a sniff of this out of Bill Zito. Come man that’s a beyond brutal ask

Francis got a 1st + McKeown, 2nd round pick in prior draft, for Sekera. The 3rd is for the retention and Nutivaara is to make the cap work. So it needs to depend on the prospect to see if it's brutal or not but it doesn't look that way to me. Giordano is much better than Sekera as well, so hopefully Seattle gets one of Florida's top prospects or Tippett.

Boston makes sense. They are a still a piece or two away from the top teams out East. Unless they want to be first round fodder, they will need an upgrade

Only way Gio comes back to Calgary is in the offseason IMO.

I feel the Flames would offersheet Holloway if they did that. And probably Beniers.
Holloway wouldn't be offer sheet eligible for years, if they want to mess with the grease they'd have to go after Pulj, can't see that happening either.

Even that feels unlikely now. Our top 4 is set. And you'd think we would want to at least give Valimaki a chance at 3LD. Which leaves us needing only a 3RD?

Can you see Gio coming back for the minimum just to play 3RD?

I don't think it's likely he comes back at all and that's fine, I was just saying there is pretty much no chance he comes back this year. He'll fit in nicely at the deadline to a contender with cap space and an open D slot.

Next year is also highly unlikely but Calgary can't afford him anyway, our cap is going to be difficult enough to navigate with all the guys due for a contract having career years. Someone will pick him up as a good 3/4 dman at 3-4Mil for 1-2 years and will be happy with him.

Add a 1st on Calgary's side and it's probably close.
I wouldn't add a 1st. I realize the offer isn't ideal. Valimaki has high 2nd or low 1st value. I just don't value upgrading the 3rd pairing enough to part with anything more than a 2nd.

I have never understood this. If you don't want to make a fair offer, just say that you have no interest in said player. Why try to make a lowball offer like that which makes little to no sense to the other team?

I've never had an offer I didn't make agreed to.

What do you figure a bottom pairing defenseman and 3rd line forward are worth exactly? Should I be offering multiple 1sts for a guy who would be our 5th best defenseman and a guy who would be our 9th best forward?

Taylor Hall went for a 2nd.

Gio is not a bottom pairing D-men. He may be on the Flames but that is not going to be his market value. And that is exactly my point. You don't need Gio, so just say so. Don't evaluate him on the basis of how he fits your team, because that is just unfair to the other team.

That would be like saying that Hertl is a 3C on the Leafs because of they have Matthews and Tavares.

It's not the same thing at all. Gio was a top pairing defenseman at one point but father time is undefeated. He was middle pairing last year and this year is bottom pairing on a good team.

Jarnkrok is a 3rd line forward for most teams in the league.

Sure. Just make sure to look back at this thread when he does get traded.

Someone might overpay. It doesn't mean he is better than a 3rd pairing guy at this stage. Giordano has 4 goals and is -13 this year. He's not the same guy he used to be. He was +40 and a 20 goal guy at his peak on a pretty mediocre team.

Heck someone paid a 1st and 3rd for David Savard. There's no logic to prices sometimes.

Sure. Double down here and say whatever that makes you happy but it is more likely to get a David Savard like return for Gio at the TDL than what you were 'offering'.

A 2nd and Valimaki isn't chicken scratch. You're talking a recent 1st and a 2nd. Giordano won't get that return. The only reason I'd do it is to offload the Monahan money.
