  • In Canada, both federal and provincial taxes are applied. In Ontario, players face some of the highest tax rates in the league. After taxes, the same $4 million contract could leave a player with around $2.0 million in take-home
Not quite true. You are assuming a player plays all 82 games at home.
41 away games are taxed at the state/province the game is played in.

Yeah, he doesn't really have a whole lot of options for teams without State Income Tax unless Vegas does Vegas things. But there's still teams like Detroit/Chicago/Columbus/Carolina/Utah that have the cap space and have significantly lower taxes.

I don't think he gets any less than $13M. Mikko got $12.5M and that was not on the open UFA market, and was in a tax free state. Yes, you can argue all day that Mikko shows up when it matters, but that's more of a fan argument than one between NHL agents and GMs who are negotiating. If a GM says that, the agent goes "OK, we'll go to the next guy."
Mikko got $12, but yes I agree with you. Classic does he want to win or get paid the most? Buffalo will give him $14-15 to go there im sure.

I want it to be Anaheim, but I suspect Utah will be more financially aggressive and perhaps more attractive.

I don't think marner is going to a team with no chance at the playoffs.

Buffalo would have to make some kind of move to make that happen, or they're losing multiple RFAs.

My bad on Mikko. For some reason I thought he was $12.5M.

Im assuming theyre losing Byram and Peterka. Both have been rumored to already ask out or hint at bridge deals then leaving.

He's going to Chicago or Minnesota of course. the Central isn't a bad enough gauntlet, the mediocre teams need to throw their hat in the mix.

Mitch >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Ehlers in the playoffs. Mitch's worst series would be Nikolaj's best.

I was gonna present the question of "What about Ehlers plus the $4M - $5M cap difference?" and then looked up his playoff performances.

Holy f*** it's bad...

Agree with this. UFA compensation is less about "fairness" and comparables and more about who is desperate and willing to make a potentially bad mistake. All it takes is one GM to be on the hotseat or shortsighted and you end up with a terrible contract. Add in that with the cap going up (and projected to go up significantly over the next 3 years) you have more teams with $'s available so contracts are likely to be especially crazy this summer.

This is another thing people don't realize. Not only do you have a massive cap increase, but you have GMs armed with the knowledge of massive cap increases over the following two seasons.

We've never had that kind of certainty. We've never known for sure where the cap will be in three years.

Agents are gonna go into July 1st saying "Why would my client sign a 7 year deal worth today's market value, when the cap is going to be almost 20% higher in two years?"

Again, I'm not seeing why Mitch is going from choking in the playoffs to not making them at all.
You can't be crucified by the media for being a ghost in the playoffs if you never make them. Maybe he just wants a no pressure gig, with a baby soft media that isn't gonna kill him. Plus he gets to play with his buddy, Sid.
