Where does "It's Cup or bust!" now rank in Oilers'-quotation history-of-cringe?

The whole "you can't squeeze other GMs" comment is easily Holland's worst. It's basically an admission that he won't do whatever it takes to make the team win.

The Avs squeezed the Isles for Devon Toews. Just imagine if we did that.

Funny thing about that though, Holland was actually right about that. They didn't win a Cup but the team went on a hell of a run 2 straight years after that comment.

"Visually better" "I know a thing or two about winning, if there was ever a concern" and pick any Eakins quote are the worst.

This is the worst. These guys may never live that down.

It's gotta be the stupidest thing he's ever said.
No way. This should have been a Cup or bust season, absolutely nothing wrong with saying that. How they followed that up is another thing but the quote is just fine. There were many worse ones in Oiler history.

Dallas Eakins: "The perfect game is zero hits."

Kevin Lowe, press conference: "We have two types of fans: we have paying customers and we have people that watch the game."

So look, I'm going to defend Dallas Eakins on that one. I don't think he was a good coach for the OIlers but he was right on this one. In a hypothetical perfect game your team makes zero hits because you maintain possession all the time and thus can't hit the other team. Number of hits is thus a very imperfect measure of how the team is doing.

But then I'm going to say that yes, K Lowe's "two tier" fan comments was probably the most cringe-inducing statement from this team. Say whatever stupid things you want about the team and it's players. We know it's going to be a lot of BS anyways, but that's just how the media game is played. But when team management starts turning on their own fans? Whether or not they pay for tickets, or just watch at home (but live and die by the team, buy the merch, generate the TV ratings to justify the money you get from your TV contract)? That's disgusting.

Lots of things pissed me off with Lowe’s comment but I think what angered me the most was when he made his apology video a day or two later from his office there was a picture over his shoulder of him winning a Stanley Cup with the Rangers. The guy won 5 of them as an Oiler but the picture he decides to prominently display while apologizing for insulting Oiler fans was from the only one he won playing for another team. The guy was so clueless I was never interested in listening to another word he said.

I'm thinking, if this season carries on anything like now, this latest cringe-quote has to be pushing into top-5 territory.

Here's what I got so far--all contending for the Hall of Fame:

Dallas Eakins: "Craig's on it!
Dallas Eakins: "Chop water, carry wood."
Dallas Eakins: "The perfect game is zero hits."
Esa Tikkanen, autumn 1991 after Muckler, Messier, Kurri, Beukeboom, Smith, Fuhr, Anderson, and (soon) Graves were all gone: "What happened to my team?"
Daryl Katz, c. 2010: "I think drafting and development is how teams quickly go from the bottom to the top. We're going to be a shining example of that."
Bob Nicholson, 2019: "There's something in the water here in Edmonton that we don't have right."
Steve Tambellini, re: Belanger: "You wanted your center, you got your center."
Pocklington, 1988 press conference: "Wayne came to me and asked to be traded."
Craig MacTavish, after 9th year of no playoffs: "Next year I would forecast as another development year."
Kevin Lowe, press conference: "We have two types of fans: we have paying customers and we have people that watch the game."
Kevin Lowe, press conference: "There’s one other guy I believe in hockey today, that is still working in the game, that has won more Stanley Cups than me, so I think I know a little bit about winning if that’s ever a concern."
Craig MacTavish: "Visually, to me, we're a better hockey team."
Ken Holland: "I looked at the guide and record book!"
Connor McDavid: "It's Cup or bust!'

What did I forget?

What's your Top-5?
I thought that was Drai that said "cup or bust"?

'I was out looking for Kovy' is still my favorite Oilers related quote and story.

A close 2nd is 'Tell him he's Wayne Gretzky'.

Edmonton expected to get hit with 10 cm of Oilers jerseys tonight

Oilers-Jerseys-800x600.jpg

EDMONTON – Environment Canada has issued a special weather advisory for the Edmonton area which is expected to receive up to 10 cm of Edmonton Oilers jerseys from disillusioned fans tonight.

“Precipitation of Edmonton Oilers paraphernalia that is expected to fall from windows and doors may include a mixture of sweaters, hats, and hoodies, making driving conditions hazardous in the city,” said meteorologist Gwyn Rogers. “According to our forecast model, added agitation from third period collapses and poor trades will only make the downfall heavier in some areas.

Officials at ETS say travellers should expect delays as crews try to clear the discarded team pride from streets. Outside of the city, powerful squalls of disappointment will create ball cap drifts on rural roads and police are advising residents to stay indoors since it’s not worth the risk for a free Oilers hat.

“We expect our plows to be working all night clearing the streets of signed McDavid and Draisaitl jerseys,” said a city manager responsible for clearing streets. “We might have to call in extra trucks from Calgary and that’s not even taking into account if they lose tonight.”

The manager paused to remove a Lucic jersey stuck underneath one of the idling plows. “We’re living in a different climate now, and Edmontonians should expect shitstorms like these will get worse every year.”

whats wrong with the quote?

It was at the end of the season presser where he was discussing the players mindset and how moral victories dont count anymore

seems like people made it sound like he proclaimed it at the start of the season

I want him to start quoting 90’s/00’s songs
“If you ain’t in it to win it then get the hell out!”
“We’ll be singing, when we’re winning”
“Gotta find a way, a better way, a better way”

Like Michael Keaton in The Other Guys.

Lots of golden oldies on the OP’s list but this one is a break out hit.
Well metaphored. I agree, and am adding this humdinger to the list...

I admire your attempt to be fair to Eakins, but... er, I disagree with you.

There are players on a hockey team whose job is to hit other guys, to play physically. (We're also talking about the NHL of 12 years ago.) A great game, well-played, means some guys are throwing their weight around. That should be required of a perfect game of certain players on the team.
