Well I guess forget about my talbot retention for a 1st plan to Colorado since they keep retooling goaltending with other teams crumbs lol

Still dont think a Wedgewood and blackwood tandem will lead them to cup glory

The title of the thread and coming out of a football Sunday got me thinking.

The Detroit Lions are having a great year and have been building their core through the draft.
Yzerman has always been preaching patience and building through the draft.

So, is Brad Holmes doing a great job (yes, he is) at this and Yzerman doing a bad job?
I STILL say no and the answer is STILL patience.

In the NFL, the Lions are drafting players that are developed. They drafted players THIS YEAR that are older than Yzerman's 2019 draft pick, Moritz Seider. Players from Holmes' first draft in 2021 are 25/26 years old. That was Edvinsson's draft year and he is 21.

Yzerman is just now entering the comparable window of when Holmes started, and it took him a couple years to turn things around while being a phenomenal GM. 18, 19, 20 year old's just aren't ready to be pros.

(Sorry for the comparison if you're not into football or the Lions)
Just because in football it's so easy to move on a from a player/bad contract.

I think they're really really uncompilable sports in a rebuild, Yzerman prolly has the harder/longer job to do between the two.

Petry and Holl don't make enough to make that much of a difference in a deal. I doubt it was Kane or Tarasenko because we just signed them. Dealing Chiarot to get Troll is robbing peter to pay paul and puts us back in the same spot.

If it's true, I think it was Copp or Compher, and my bet is it would be Compher.

Copp played in ny so cant see him saying no and if we dealt compher we'd have a hole at center shorterm .

Think if we made compher at 4 mill available we'd get a good return. My money's on a defenceman and gotta think it would be chiarot since hes close to 5

Who knows though

Easier to get rid of the player, but you still have to deal with the dead money.

Example - Browns can cut Deshaun Watson if they want, but they will still owe him a bunch of money the next 2 years.

If Sharks can get a 2nd round pick and a 3rd line player for Blackwood [goalie], then what can Yzerman get for Cam Talbot?

I'd be fine running Husso, Lyon and Cossa or Campbell (until Lyon returns)

They need all the wood. Black and wedged. That's when their other goalie Trent miner comes in

Who would be the trade partners? It feels like the Avs would have been our best chance at moving a goalie for some value and that ship has seemingly sailed.

Edmonton, maybe. But what would be the return?

We'd probably half to retain half of talbot's salary for a trade to work on the edmonton side of things. Also, unless skinner completely tanks, Edmonton is going to prioritize a 2nd pair dman over a goalie.

A Mid round pick for a 50% retained talbot is probably the best we could get out of Edmonton, IMO. In that scenario, Id rather keep Talbot.

Yeah, lots of players contracts, especially guys on bigger ones have protections like that so they aren't cut early. Aaron Rodgers contract is a mess for the Jets...

But then... In that same breath they have guys like Haason Reddick and D.J. Reed who make over 20 million per year each, and if cut only count to about 5 million. Both will be easy cuts next years for the Jets, where in the NHL that's a rough buyout at the least or another year stuck.

It's just much easier to get good and go from being good too bad in the NFL vs NHL. NFL/NBA you can get good quick, MLB/NHL take a minute and the MLS... whatever, who knows. I know more about volleyball, golf and bowling than soccer.

*Watson wasn't a good example dude, lol, he's literally got a historic fully guaranteed contract pretty much all owners in the league were pissed about.

You said it’s easier to get out of bad contacts in the NFL and the Watson contract, while extreme, illustrates how that’s not always the case. So I’d say it’s both a good example and pretty relevant, but to each their own I guess.

Your other point of it being easier to go from bad to good in the NFL I would agree with. That’s part of the reason think the NHL should do away with the lottery.

I think Fedorov's number should be retired, and it will when all dinosaurs will die, but there is no way the initial negotiations was not fair. The first generation Russians were very greedy, Fedorov's attitude toward the game was completely different from Yashin, with respect to money his attitude was the same. I read enough stupid stuff which his father happily unloaded to newspapers (like complaining that his son is paid peanuts in 2002, using his actual salary and not mentioning that the half of his total contract value was paid out as Cup bonus in 1998). Ilitch had all the reason to feel the one being backstabbed by Fedorov in 1998 and repaid him in 2003, which was the right call.

But if you as owner let this things impact your perception of on ice greatness, you look like a petty idiot. You had your revange in 2003, let bygones be bygones
The irony is that all that money Fedorov chased ended up being stolen by a fraudulent financial adviser he got tied in with. I think most all players in the happenings have moved on from it but in a sense Fedorov created all that drama for no real gain, at least not long term.

Fame was all a part of it too, he wanted to be like Ovechkin/Crosby level famous but then he went from being a household name the greatest hockey town on the planet to just another sports guy in California where there are cities filled with movie stars, and then to Columbus OH of all places.

To give some idea of scale of the theft Fedorov left in 2003, he filed charges against his financial advisor in 2009. Which means some time between 2003 and 2009 Fedorov was taken for most everything. In 2015 courts awarded 60 million in damages but there is no record if he ever collected.

He of course is not poor by any means but is probably financially worth about an 1/3th of what he would have been and ended up with a mixed NHL legacy. But will still always be my favorite player because holy cow did he light up the ice and was a playoff beast. I think when he got invited to the alumni game that was awesome. There is no way to ever really know but I think he might have been better off staying a wing even though the negotiations went sour.

I'd rather have a hole than Compher the way he is playing this season.
