Where did Yzerman go wrong with the rebuild?

Buchelnikov is probably someone you hold onto to find out but honestly my hopes are not that high. From the video I see I don't think his skills translate he is not just small but is built like a toothpick and most of the goals I see are being open in high percentage areas which is not going to happen as much in the NHL unless he is another incarnation of Brett Hull.
We just don't have that many guys with upside after round 1 though. Lombardi? I'd be open to moving buchelnikov in a big deal but it would have to be for another kid with huge upside

I don't get your logic.

In deepest drafts you don't have to tank. You'll get a quality guy with lower 1sts, like Red Wings did in double amounts.

At drafts not so deep, you should have the top picks.

Most drafts don't have all top 3 picks good enough to be franchise level players. That year specifically looks that good. Had we bottomed out and gotten a top 3 pick we wouldn't be worried about a 2nd line center developing into Larkins replacement as he ages out of being a #1 C.

Nothing against Kasper or Danielsson but they could very well top out as 2/3 C's. They aren't finished developing by any means. But if at least one of them doesn't max out when Larkin starts to regress the best we can hope for is a Nashville era team with Webber/Suter.

Bedard, Cooley, and the other guy of that draft year would make most a lot more confident of getting a Larkin replacement. I believe the only reason we got Larkin was because he was behind Eichel that year. Most teams were focused on viewing him so to a degree Larkin slipped through the cracks to 15 for us that year because he was the #2 center at Michigan and the USDT.

Had Larkin not been behind Eichel I really don't think he would have been available for the Wings at 15.

If you told me in 2019 THIS is where we would be in almost 2025 i would have not been pleased. Literally everything is banking on most of our top draft picks OVERACHIEVING to fix this mess.
We're still waiting for guys from 2021 to "overripe" and seider and raymond are basically only guys from early drafts to be here

didnt help taking zadina and Rasmussen. Guess hakan lost his touch lol

I've seen him drive to the inside and outmuscle guys at the KHL level, so I don't know about that

I agree…I believe that we have some decent talent coming up and with the right guy behind the bench this team can find it’s way into the playoffs.
Playoffs????? This how sad our team's become? I want championships, give me more cups before I die I dont playoffs

If having a painful season this year helps us get there faster I'd rather do that then get pick 14... and no doesnt mean I'm already rooting for us to lose this year but I'm also realistic this roster f*cken sucks

Team will not just magically become a championship winning team. We're gonna have to get to the playoffs first. Probably stumble a few times before being ready. Even Larkin who is our like big star at the moment have a grand total of 5 playoff games. Seider, Raymond and the others obviously have 0. DeBrincat don't have too many either etc.

And hell even when you are a so called contender a lot of things need to be right for you to eventually win.

no sh*t we won't win the cup first try I'm just stating my goal isn't playoffs . I want cups and have no intentions of being content with a playoff appearance here and there

If it takes another top pick to get there quicker I won't cry

Which is exactly Yzerman's goal and why he's taking a long term approach. He wants a team that will be Cup competitive for years.

That takes time to build when you aren't gifted a McDavid and Draisaitl.

Isn't this how all rebuilds work?

Draft/trade for players and hope their development exceeds their draft slot/acquisition cost?

Baby steps…Unfortunate reality is we’re stuck with what we have on the ice and behind the bench for the remainder of this season

This right here…And how many other top 3, top 5, top 10 picks have the Oilers been blessed with?

Geez - now I think I officially despise them more than the Blackhawks…

100 % which is why I laugh at all the fire yzerman crowd. If his draft picks bust then we can fire him as much as I love the player. We still have yet to see 5-10 guys

I don't think we're even close to winning and prob delayed things cause chris ilitch asked to be competitive sooner which is why we signed copp etc (my guess) and made us draft higher last few drafts

Anyways top pick this draft would end up being beneficial longterm. Cant see yzerman making a big splash soon

Tangential but the league should get rid of the draft lottery and would be better without it. The worst team should get the best pick. Period.

The league overreacted to teams tanking for McDavid but the reality is teams make more money when they are good. Teams are literally incentivized to be not bad.

Shesterkin to our Red Wings? Players you choose in obverse direction? I am for Lyon and I meant confess Lyon the chance to round 30 later lets Shesterkin to us if Lyon failed.

I believe Shesterskin would cost way too much for us - you would need to send at least a Seider, Raymond, or Larkin + 1st and ??? I don't think they want Larks with their lineup but in a rebuild we'd be paying so much to upgrade just one piece. We would give up consistent scoring or defense to replace it with a legitimate number of wins but I don't think the upside is there for us unless New York completely implodes. I get that superstars accelerate rebuilds - but we'd be stepping back 2 years to get a longer run. Intruiging proposition, but I don't see it.

I don't think that makes much sense. The Wings have 2 top 10 goalie prospects in the world (I'd argue Cossa is top 3-5) and we're looking at a very friendly cap hit with hopefully good to great goaltending during the contention window.

The only team to successfully rebuild in the last decade+ is Toronto. You have a few successful retools (LA, Vancouver, Rangers) but only one rebuild. Ottawa, Buffalo and Detroit are the most recent teams to try to win after a full rebuild and it's gone terribly for all of them. Detroit is attempting to exit their rebuild without acquiring any elite forward talent outside of Raymond. And as expected, the team is near last in goals. The only 2 options are tank again and pray for a lottery win in 2025/26 or trade prospects and picks for elite talent.

Everyone is looking at the "window" in 3-4 years but that window doesn't exist. If Kasper and Danielson pan out reasonably, you have a Compher replacement in Kasper and a 60pt centre in Danielson, not good enough upfront. Defense and goaltending should be set, but that doesn't win championships alone. This team desperately needs elite forwards. Without a serious move, this team will be lucky to make the playoffs in the next 3-4 years.

In what mindset are you able to convince yourself that they are exciting the rebuild at this stage? They are in the process, yes they have gone from bottom fodder to being let's say competitive on most nights over the last 2 seasons plus this year, but by no means are they even close to be out of it. They are maybe half way, we shall see when Kasper, Danielson, ASP, MBN and others like Lombardi/Buium/Cossa/Augustine/Buchelnikov come into the team or at least are into a spot for they make it or break it before coming to any conclusions about it.

When you trade assets for players (Debrincat) and you attempt to sign vets to plug holes. You are exciting the rebuild, and then add in the barely any cap space portion. The offseason of 2022 was a clear sign of that. None of the Wings prospects have game breaking offensive talent. The prospects they bring in are going to fill holes when free agents leave.
