Where did Yzerman go wrong with the rebuild?

Wings have cap flexibility going forward for the years that actually matter. Who is signed long term? Sure there is guys signed through next year which suck, no one likes that but that's minor in the bigger picture.
Indeed. Let's just hope Steve doesn't cap out again by signing two more Copps and a Holl this July, just because he has space.

A huge part of why this rebuild failed is the lack of high end talent. Seider is elite, Raymond and Larkin are nice pieces. Nothing special after that. This team should've stayed at rock bottom until they had lottery luck. Yeah the 19-20 season was miserable, but so is this season and the foreseeable future. Signing older washed up players not only block younger players, but also keep Detroit in purgatory (not good enough for the playoffs, not bad enough for a realistic chance at the lottery). Being the 6th oldest team in the NHL while having only one high end prospect sure is a terrible spot to be.
We are in the 6th season of rebuilding from a complete dumpster fire of depleted roster and prospect pool. Defense is set, forwards are shaping up, it's promising pipeline in net. Several of Yzerman's high profile picks are not even on the roster yet, but yeah rebuild failed, got it.

First thing he went wrong with the rebuild is not firing Laloss 3 weeks ago, 2nd thing he went wrong with is not firing Laloss 2 weeks ago, third thing he went wrong is not firing Laloss a week ago. And now he again goes wrong not giving Laloss the boot as a christmas present.
I'd just assume keep Lalonde, bring up kids from GR, trade vets, and hope for the best at the lottery...IMHO this season was in question from the start and it appears it's done...If there was any chance of making the playoffs this season it would have had been done with a different coaching staff.

Defense is set? Forward are shaping up? What?

We have no good defensemen after Seider and Ed, and neither of them are elite level. Larkin, Raymond and Debrincat are our only high end forwards, then everyone else are interchangeable 3rd and 4th line guys and that includes Kasper, Danielson and MBN currently. There is nothing “shaping up” about our roster.

by all means get rid of him though I don't think he's really helping at this point either

Lalonde has no system in place that appears to be working, the players have pretty much checked out, this has been going on for several seasons starting with Blashill.

It's painfully obvious these team needs an experienced coach from outside of Yzerman's comfort zone.

While the roster this season is nothing special - it's certainly better than what the results have shown...A new coaching staff was needed this past summer.

Sorry to tell you, but Seider is an elite defenceman

We have a number 1 and number 2 D, that is like every rebuild's wet dream. We have 2 passable NHL top lines. I don't know what more anyone could expect after 5 years from the completely bottom and no top 3 picks. Half of the prospects Yzerman drafted are not even on the roster yet. It's like people just need to manufacture things to be negative about.

The playoffs. This is the NHL - half the teams make it in.

Yeah, the Red Wings likely would have been blasted by the Rangers had they made it in (they would have avoided the Rangers if they didn't fall balls first into a woodchipper in March with 7 straight losses), but it's valuable playoff experience that younger players need.

They’re in year six of Yzerman and are in second to last place in the eastern conference in a league where literally half the teams play beyond game 82 and have regressed compared to where they were in 2022-23, which was Lalonde's 1st year. That’s unacceptable.

There is no rebuild on earth where fans can be bricked up about where their team is heading with those results after almost six years - especially with the fact that almost none of Detroit’s prospects that are supposedly going to ride in and save the day eventually are posting impressive numbers right now in the minors. Nate Danielson has three goals in 29 games in the AHL, while Carter Mazur had only 17 goals in 60 games last year.

Those numbers are anything but encouraging about how they'll perform in a more talented League like the NHL. Could they theoretically arrive and suddenly become elite? Sure, but I'm not holding my breath.

Regarding prospect forwards who have made the jump to the NHL, Marco Kasper sure isn't anything special (yet) with his two goals in 29 games.

"2 passable NHL top lines"? What's passable about Tarasenko's four goals in 33 games? What's passable about Compher's identical four goals in 33 games? Sometimes Andrew Copp slots into the top-6...he has seven goals in 34 games.

Huh? Where's the second one?

The Wings have 3 players with double digit goals, Copp has 7 (2 EN) and Raz has 6 (1 EN).

For comparison, the Caps random mashup of NHL castaways have 5 double digit scorers and 9 players with 7 or more goals. That doesn't even include PLD with 26 points or Carlson with 23.

Maybe by passable he meant that you could pass them by?

The roster is definitely a problem but I wouldn't say Lalonde overperformed so much as the team.

December and March were mind-numbing to watch as a fan and really exposed the ugly side of whatever "system" Lalonde implements. Constant odd man rushes against, refusal to shoot the puck without a wide open net, passive defense in our own end, etc. Same shit we're dealing with this year, we were just able to outscore it on good nights, and Lyon last year was able to steal some games.

And either people have overlooked it or nobody wants to admit it, but Seider was 100% a more dynamic player under Blashill. I dunno if his hockey IQ is something Lalonde has stifled or if his God-awful assignments have just required him to play a "Safer" game, but he is not nearly as creative as he was in his rookie season.

First, I'd really quibble with your downgrading of Danielson and Kasper based on a very small sample size and based on literally one stat, but that aside...if you're going to trash Danielson/Mazur/Kasper for their lack of counting stats, if you're being fair you then have to bring up ASP and Buch, right?

No. Why look at both sides when you can just choose negative?
