I still think Stevie Y is that guy. But the Wings do need to start gaining some traction as an organization. Probably two years before the water starts getting hot.

They got Seider and it seems a bunch if nice, or lower pieces, nothing that stands out elsewhere like Seider.

He didn't get a McDavid/Matthews/Hughes layup to build around. Hopefully for the Wings they get some lottery luck in this draft.

They need more game-breaking offensive talent. When you see the kind of talent the top teams have and then you look at the Wings' roster, it's pretty bleak and it doesn't look like there's a big turnaround coming next season, either.
Yea the just need some young core pieces on offense. Like what they are doing on defense though

It's not just about his rep. It's that he was handed a dumpster fire from Holland, got no help in the draft, and the moves he's been making have for the most part been good.

For anyone who follows what's going on and where the Wings were as an organization not too long ago, everything is going extremely well. It could have been much worse. Yzerman pretty much couldn't have done better with what he had.

Imo they need to take a step forward next year. Similar to Ottawa. They are making win-now moves so they should start winning now

Yeah, maybe they should just draft a Connor McDavid level player to get things going.
There definitely running the risk of getting passed by mtl in the rebuild stage here.

It'll be tough to make any kind of sizable step forward IMO. They have lots of cash but the free agent crop next offseason is dismal. There are only like 4 players on the roster that could be considered quality pieces over the next 5 years.
They will have to hope other teams will be looking to unload youngish good pieces which may or may not happen.
Anyone who wants to criticize the Yzerman rebuild should point out what he could have done differently that would have the team in a better spot. He can’t pull star talent out of thin air and he has drafted very well in the first round so far. He’s made a bunch of small moves that have worked out and improved the team and the future incrementally. Blaming Yzerman for lousy lottery luck is nonsensical

Sure, but we should expect that young players take a step forward. Even though there aren't any major UFAs doesn't mean there aren't smart ones to target

When you take an absolutely horrible team and you want to turn it into a serious Stanley Cup contender, it typically takes longer than 4 years. I mean even if you draft a great D man, Centre, and Goalie, they are barely ready to contribute in 4 years. There are some quick turnarounds, but most fall short. In my opinion, to be a real cup contender you need two really good Centers, a number one and two D man and a good supporting cast. Not to mention a good starting goalie. That takes a lot of high draft picks plus a lot of luck to accumulate, and more than 4 years to marinate. So long as Yzerman is accumulating blue chip prospects at a solid rate and is leveraging his cap space for more assets, you shouldn’t be calling for his head because that’s the kind of progress you should be seeing.
