What's With Bunting This Season?

While he hasn't had a great start this year, I don’t really hold the playoffs against him. I don’t think he was anywhere near healthy enough to return from that knee injury.
 
They need to stop playing guys they need to sign to contracts next to Matthews and Marner. What exactly is the point of having M&M inflate their point totals, signing them to a $3-$4 million/yr deal and then moving them down in the lineup?

You think they're going to put up the same amount of points on the 2nd or 3rd line that they would with Matthews and Marner?

Even without the big offensive numbers this year, he's still a good pest type of player out there. He's aggressive and gets involved. Sometimes players go through cold stretches, he had a lot of good chances that didn't go in.

Some players peak at different times. But it's also likely last year was a bit of a fluke.

Bunting's issues are his shooting success is way down, and Matthews shooting success is way down. Bunting was 13.1% last year, the same 4.2% as Matthews this year.

Bunting was a 26 year old "rookie" last year. If you don't make the NHL full-time until you're 26, you're probably not all that great. 26 is also right in the middle of the average players scoring prime, so that could possibly be his career best season.

You just repeated what I said.
 
I saw the clip of his goal against the Pens, in front of the net and getting his stick on it. If he is to be effective he has to be a net driving presence, a pest. He should play this style of game and not apologize for being a pain in the ass for the opposition while also drawing penalties.

This is even more important in the playoffs. Get into the good habits now and don't back down against their tough D Men.
 
I think it's somewhat of a two part issue

Bunting to be successful needs to be like hyman and retrieve puck while being a pest.

He's doing less of that but we're also sending our D very deep into the corners on a lot of occasion and basically taking his job from him

When it works it works well ( see the Benn goal) but we have also done stuff like play give and goes with Muzzin in the opposing teams corner which was weird.

I wonder how much of that is going into this as he may be being asked to be on a different part of the ice this year
 
He finna bang that thang up after the last game! The chirp is there, the chip is there, the hard mentality is there and now the goals Come too 👏👏👏🍁 what a guy to have! CHEAP!
 
Prior to yesterday's outburst, in the few preceding games I thought he played really well, but just wasn't getting the bounces for the puck to go in for him.

I think he is a very effective player flanking either Matthews/Marner or Tavares/Nylander, and will score a decent amount of points because of it by association.

He just needs to stay true to his game by getting into the dirty areas and doing the dirty work, and the results will follow.
