Cap is going up quite a bit in the next few years though so there's going to be inflation.
Potentially.

There's already concerns about the Canadian dollar because of a certain person in power who doesn't understand how things work suggested putting something in place that would hurt the Canadian dollar/economy until those same things are put into place hurt his country just as much and then he'll realize what a stupid idea it is and go back to not doing it.

Trying to leave politics out of it, but there's a chance it won't go as high as it was projected to go before.

I dont think we should re-sign him i believe will have better options in Beck and Hage and for our 4th line center i rather have a bigger physical body
Bigger physical center Gives us another option. If Evans could return key piece I move him. Chesley and a second or even a third I would.

His value will not be higher than it is now.

You trade him at the deadline, I think you can get a good young prospect or late 1st for him.

You don't commit to 28 y old bottom 6ers at this stage of a rebuild.

You do that when you are in your window to contend and when your young core is locked up.

Best exemple is Colorado trading for Lehk and extending him. Perfect depth piece at the right time. Those depth UFAs often will also sign for a bit less to play with a contender.

Beck is a future #3 C IMO. He fits perfectly the core as well and will step up in the NHL as soon as next season I think.

Assuming he is a future #3C, that future starts as soon as next year.

We sure he’s ready for that now?

Wouldn't it be worth exploring how much it might cost to extend Evans, he can help transition Beck in rather then immediately sticking him with the responsibilities that Evans currently has.

I'm not really for keeping or trading Evans, I could go either way, but there seems to be an assumption Beck can just step right in.

3x3.

I don't want to spend more than $3 million on a 3/4c. He'll be 29 in June. Three years is long enough to show faith and short enough that if he's still good at 32 you can give him another deal before 35.

Beck is having a better AHL rookie season at 20 than Evans did at 22. He also has far more success as a junior/NCAA player. He has the draft pedigree too. I’ll take my chances rather than overpay for a guy playing like a 3C for the first time in his career.
Beck has still done squat at the NHL level. Assuming AHL prospects will automatically continue to play at the same level in the NHL is a long time trap some folks here fall into.

Even if Beck does do great next season for the Habs, though, there are still two other center spots to fill. Expecting Kapanen to fill one next season is a recipe for failure. He's most likely to be playing in the AHL or Europe in 2025-26, while Hage should still be in the NCAA.

It's going to take time to see how the center prospects shake out, and past history says not all of them will make it. Casually discarding a viable NHL center in Evans to prematurely make space for all of them would be a mistake.

You can never have too much center depth, and right now the Habs have no depth at the position for next season.

If he goes to the highest bidder, and barring a bad injury, I think he will get 4 years if he wants it.

With his history, I think he will want to stretch his term as long as he can.

Don't blame him at all. He's have a really nice year. Great for him. Dangerous for teams. I just don't want to get stuck with a "death by a thousand cuts" contract.

If we had a real 2C there wouldn’t be an issue. That’s the position that needs to be upgraded this summer.

Cap is going up quite a bit in the next few years though so there's going to be inflation.

Remains to be seen. Worldwide debt bubble, most economies are trending towards recession, Canadian dollar is in a downward spiral to the point where franchises like Winnipeg and Ottawa could potentially be threatened in the long term, I'll believe a 100m cap once it happens and if it remains.

I think Evans is very affective on the bottom 6. If someone calls and offer a first round pick, 2nd round pick and prospect (not out of the question Tampa did it). Yes Evans pack your bags.

We can try to resign him in the offseason. He is a UFA.

Dvorak anywhere from a 3rd round pick is ok for me.

I think he could be a good catch for a team scrambling to replace an injured vet for a SC run. I would resign him to a tradable contract, whatever that looks like, he has value.

I'd give him $3M happily at however many years he wants.

If he wants more, which he will, I'd give him $3.5M without question but I'd cap the years a lot lower.

So $3Mx7 or $3.5Mx5.

If he wants $4M, I'd probably cap my offer at 3 years.

Could also give him more term at a lower AAV, for someone like Evans, maybe the security of more term might be worth more than a slightly higher AAV over less years.

You can always transition Evans to wing in the bottom 6, or find a way to move him out with 2 years left on his term.
Moving out contracts with 2 years remaining isn’t easily done, look at our own team. I would stick to 4 years. That should remain safe the duration of the contract and I would give up to 4million per.

If he wants anything more than 3.5m he has to be moved. Adam Henrique makes 3m, Domi makes 3.75m, Nick Paul makes 3.1.

3x3 would be market value.
You have zero chance of signing him at 3 x 3....that is not remotely his market value.

Henrique is old, Domi is a defensive disaster and Paul plays in a state with zero income tax. These are brutal comparisons.

I submit that if you want Evans that it will take at least 4 x 4 and I believe it will end up surpassing that, especially if we trade him and he shows well in the playoffs.

I will pay the 4 x 4 all day as Suzuki, Slaf, Caufield and Guhle are all on potentially great deals if they continue to evolve and the cap goes up as much as it is believed to be going up. I would even consider 5 x 4 as well as Evans appears to be coming into his own and is a perfect student of MSL's teachings. He has a great head on his shoulders and will be a fantastic leader and example for the young crop that is coming up over the next two season.

This team desperately needs to fill out the bottom six with bigger, meaner bodies but will need cerebral leaders like Evans to form cohesive lines.

Why
Hummm … 🥹

why only looking this season to build his next contract?. I mean. Since 2019, he is around 30 points/ year. He is a bottom line centerman. He is going to be 29 years old next year. 3.5 x 3. I wouldnt give him more than 4 millions per year. Look what happen with Dvorak. We can't handle his contract and we are stuck with him. Jake evans isnt immune to a regression. If he wants more than 4, bye bye. I would prefer to sign a UfA cheeper

Situation can and should remain relatively fluid while we see what we can get for him.

I share your sentiment on the age though, going into next season at 29 you have to think he probably has 3-4 years at this level left. Anything longer than that is taking on risk

He has fundamentally changed his game and has put the tools all together as by his own admission, he has finally found, understood and accepted a role. He has the cofidence of his coach to try the things that he always had the ability to do and is proving that he can do it. He is one of the most intelligent people in the league and I think that he can sustain 40+ points while playing a great 2 way game. I think he will be a good player for the next 4-5 years as he is so smart and such a good skater. His contract will be insulated by potentially huge savings on Caufield, Suzuki, Slaf and Guhle over the entire life of a 4-5 year deal.
