The Habs need to be very calculated with how they build their bottom 6 starting with their decision on Evans.
I'm ok with slightly over paying home grown bottom 6 players but you have to look at the context of the bottom 6. Is it smart to pay Evans 4mil when Gallagher and Anderson are likely locked into bottom 6 spots for the next 2 years? Heineman will be looking for a new deal and you are stuck with Newhook and maybe Dach in bottom 6 roles. It's starting to get a bit out of hand from a cap perspective.
Then you have Beck, Kapanen, Tuch, Xhekaj etc. looking for spots next season. Do you gamble on bringing rookies up soon or does that set the timeline back another year? I would like to see them push for a playoff spot next year myself and no doubt Evans can help with that goal. But does it handicap the team from improving other areas (defence)? It will be very interesting to see how they navigate this.
