I did leave the Canucks because (a) Mike Keenan came in and (b) traded my favorite player - Trevor Linden, and my favorite goaltender - Kirk McLean. And I was living in Denver at the time so I switched to the Avalanche.

I didn't leave the Avalanche but I bumped them to #2 because (a) I grew up in Seattle and have been saying for the past forty years that I'd switch to the Seattle team once they got one, and (b) Stan Kroenke has been actively doing everything in his power to ensure that I can't actually watch the Avalanche here in Denver.

I’ll never stop being a fan completely of a local team but my interest can drop way way down. I haven’t followed the White Sox, Bulls, or Bears in probably 15 years at this point. I’ve been to Sox games in that time but I couldn’t name you more than a few players on the teams in any given year.

Ownership/management is consistently unable to build a winner. They’re either intentionally not trying, like Reinsdorf, or they’re so entrenched in their hierarchy of incompetence like the McCaskey’s with the Bears they’re unable to get it done. Either way what’s the point? Both of those groups have been running things for my entire life and nothing has changed.

Life is short and there’s a million things to do why would I be heavily invested in a franchise that either can’t ever win or doesn’t seriously want to win in the first place?

Thankfully it does seem like D. Wirtz + Kyle Davidson are legitimately trying to build a Cup contender so I’ve been enjoying the rebuild process even though it’s the worst hockey I’ve ever seen in my life.

The Canucks have sorely tried my patience many, many times over the last 54 years and I'm still around. That said, some kind of Kyle Beach type sexual assault and team cover-up could easily finish me as a fan.

Hard to imagine souring on TB while Vinik is running things. I'm losing faith in JBB, but that happens.

If I were a Leaf fan though, and they ran it back again without making some kind of monumental effort to change the structure of their cap spending, I'd probably be eyeballing other teams pretty hard.

Nothing. If the Benning years didn't make me quit then nothing will.

Unless the Canucks got relocated like the Grizzlies. That would certainly grind my gears but I would probably still follow the team.

Whether it be a player they draft/sign/trade for, a staff member they hire, etc. What's one thing that if your team did, would make you quit on them and never come back?

For me if I find my team protecting confirmed abusers, I would be anti-them asap. Which is honestly why I'm glad the Sens at least cut contact with Formenton well before the investigation for the 2018 Hockey Canada abusers.
If my team did what the Chicago Blackhawks did, I'd stop being a fan immediately.

I find some of the answers quite odd - Some blokes would be more angry at the team moving, trading players, etc than say, the vast many that have employed players that are rapists, sexual assault convicted players, revenge porn convicted, etc. I mean sure, the team will add these players, but I would never ever be caught dead putting up a tag as "#1 Fan.." of a gang rapist.

That's some "well, he plays hard though" type of bs.

The irony is when the Team Canada players are charged and handed some super weak Canadian justice system sentencing, teams will still line up to add some of those players.
If they drafted a kid that's not good enough just because his dad is the aging star of the team and appears to be making all the personnel decisions.
What's sad is that this absolute wanker of a human being owns a fraction of the Penguins, but I agree, getting the Lakers to draft his mediocre ass son instead of a better player...lol

The thought of a reverse sweep in the finals was testing, I won’t lie. But before Game 7 I knew I’d still come back next year if they blew it. Been through too much with them to let them go.

And since I can’t think of a worse thing to happen, aside from the team no longer existing, I think the Panthers are stuck with me.

I'd probably stop being a fan if they ceased to exist. :dunno:
As a European it's just a brutal thought that this is a very possible scenario for a large number of fans across the NA pro sports system. Would absolutely break my heart if my hometown team simply relocated to somewhere hundreds or thousands of miles away.

SHL team but guess same logic applies. I stopped being a "die hard"(going to most if not all home games and a few away games during a season, knowing all players on the team+most numbers etc) when the on ice-product became bad and the pricing of tickets higher at the same time.

I am still a fan but moreso casually, catch a game here and there+all playoff games but rarely attend games and certainly don't know all player of opposing teams etc. Covid also played a role since I never really found my way back to the arena after, just realized I didn't care enough to spend money and energy on it I guess.

Now quitting completly? Well if it became boring enough I certainly would, that's all it takes no more no less.

On the bright side at least we all share the same risk of an asteroid hitting the cities wiping out our favorite teams....... and much much more.
