What's going on with Alex Galchenyuk?

Terrible draft year. Gally has the most games played from any draftee that year, 3rd most goals and 4th most points. That is not really out of whack with a third overall. Although that speaks more to that draft year than the player. Heck Cody Ceci is 20th in points from that draft ......

Alex "suitcase" galchenyuk.

On HNIC they said that his stay in Carolina might not be long either.

As a habs fan it's hard to say what happened, he had chances to step up and just never did.

Man makes me want to pull out the map I had of Habs players and their drama right from the Russian mob drama from 20 years ago right through Nate getting photographed alleged doing blow in a nightclub during the playoffs.
Prust and his wife at the time (quebec actrice) we're known for partying and what comes with it. Prust apparently initiated Gally to that stuff, I've heard. Had multiple friends from high end bars and restaurants tell me about it.

I think Prust was a grown man and it didn't affect his career, but Alex was a lost puppy.

I don't know anything about him prior to 2018, but during his brief stint on the Pens he was honestly one of the worst Penguins in recent memory. He did NOTHING positive out there.

I have no idea how he ever scored 30 goals or how he was a 1st round pick, let alone a top 5 pick. If he wasn't a top 5 pick he'd be out of the league years ago.

I always thought montreal really overhyped the crap out of him

At the time he had all the tools to be a 60 pt player. His game just never developed any further, and he never learned or committed himself to getting better in the areas that he lacked. What the reasons are for that inability is still up for debate. In the end his hockey IQ just wasn't high enough to overcome the large deficiencies in his game.

Its a shame he couldn't pull it together. The raw skill was there for him to be a really good offensive player. There were just too many holes in his game that he just never improved on.

He was never that good to begin with, but it seems he’s gotten even worse since leaving Montreal. You’d think you could get passable 2W production from him. Nope. And if he isn’t on the scoresheet, there isn’t much reason to keep him in the lineup.

They did, it’s a MTL thing, AG was totally overhyped! PK, similar story.

He put up some good numbers for a while but it was all smoke and mirrors. The guy was beyond a defensive liability and had to be sheltered. If Mtl didn’t have the puck they were practically playing 5v4 with this guy on the ice. He was lazy & zero hockey IQ.

It wasn't even like he looked lazy or disinterested out there...usually when a guy falls off like this it's because of something like that, but Galchenyuk didn't look like a guy with all the tools and no toolbox, he looked like a guy who showed up to work with a toolbox full of Fisher-Price plastic tools. No matter how long he stayed on the ice after practice completed, those tools weren't going to get the job done.

The best player in that draft may be the Lightning goalie. The top four may be the worst of any draft year.

yeah,,was looking at the draft the other day and wow...2012 was brutal. Interesting that leading up to it , the scouts were saying that it was very weak so they werent wrong!!

I remember in his first few years I didn't see much potential in his play, yet fans from Ontario (mostly Leafs fans I figured) on HF kept saying that Galchenyuk would be a superstar. He was sold to us. We were lied to!

PK wasn't overhyped. He reached great heights.

He was a good sniper without proper players to feed him pucks. He is still a bit like that. He's a threat on the PP. Habs had DD as their no1 center, so imagine what he had when he didn't play on the top line lol... To me, Galch is still a good depth scoring sniper or PP specialist but he needed to developp his 5v5 game and it seems he never was able to. Also, in Mtl, they probably messed hi development when trying him as a center. Like they did with Drouin.

Great goalie draft and some alot of very good depth players . Top-end was really weak though . Some really good late bloomers.

He has a wicked one timer that he refuses to use... except for that one year when he scored 30. It's puzzling, really

He should have played the same way Michael Ryder played but in his head he's some kind of Datsyuk

Strawman argument.

no one said what you’re claiming
It’s not an argument, it’s a comment on how stupid your post was, i suggest looking up what argument means.

He was never the same player after that hit to a knee, he was serviceable NHL’er, lead the Habs in points at that moment for matter of fact. Having his knee blown out and him not being the same after it has nothing to do with his IQ, anyone with a half a brain realizes that.

To me, he was never used properly, Habs brass love the 2way forwards but he was just never built to become that, and he could've been a great top line sniper with a top centerman and a hard worker to complement them, but his skillset is lacking for any other duty, hecne why he has trouble playing on 3rd and 4rth lines. He has a great release and can dangle a bit, and has natural goal scoring talent. These guys can be succesful you just have to shelter them and live with their flaws. As you said, he led the Habs in points through a rough season, he wasn't just complete garbage then. Nowdays, issssh, he still one of the most dangerous Sens on the PP though. Sadly for the Sens.

So glad we got rid of that entire culture from the team.
