Thanks for Savage Republic. I'll check them out later. I love a lot of those punk bands you mentioned. My one friend I've known since Middle School is really into punk. You hang out with him for an hour and bands like Stiff Little Fingers, Angry Samoans, Government Issue all are name dropped.

Most of Savage Republic's work came out limited and numbered. They formed at UCLA--they were also primarily because of their focus on percussion like very early industrial. The record I liked most was Tragic Figures. I ran into this record at a record store in Manhattan on W. 3rd St called Bleecker Bob's. I also first heard the Angry Samoans Back to Samoa walking in the door there. They were playing that record and it was so hilarious to me.

I actually think we need more OT threads from time to time.

Not that I want to turn this into a board about hobbies, but I think discussions that are off-topic do serve a purpose and can actually help support the hockey-related interactions on here.

People are a little less inclined to make something personal, or want to go full-on beast mode when you just chatted with them about an album or movie or game you both enjoy.

Anyone hear a fan of XTC? One of the most underrated and interesting bands of all time. There was this They Might Be Giants song called XTC vs. Adam Ant they used to play in the mid-late 90s that got all my friends curious about them and collecting their CDs so it rubbed off on me. And then I realized it was the same band that Primus covered on their first covers EP.
Those bands take me back quite a way. I think that They Might be Giants are touring again. Always liked XTC. They came along before the New Wave invasion.

ForumFool69: I was watching the new Minor Leagues in Guam, and I think we should make a pitch for L’Carpetron Dookmarriot. He’s a right handed shot, and he says his favorite team is the Rangers. Then we should be good to go.

@ReggieDunlop68 inner monologue: man what a stupid f***ing idea, but...he does like Ride the Lightning.

The day I start recommending hockey prospects from Guam is the day I need a mod to pull the plug on my account.

It would be a mercy killing.

Finishing up the latter years of George Harrison this morning, while sifting through some data.

Which has me in the mood to follow-up with some Traveling Wilburys

Today, heard some Tupac and Biggie. I love rock n' roll, but these guys need their love and due.

Lots of "throwback" discussion in this thread which is near and dear to my heart, I can certainly appreciate, and yet still has given me a few new albums to spin - thanks!

Wanted to drop a line on a new(er) band that I think is assuming the mantle for rock and roll in 2018 extremely well - Twin Peaks. As I mentioned I made it to 23 shows in 2018 (yay grad school) and they topped the list. Definitely some serious Stones/Lou Reed sounds, but (to me) not in a "designed by an algorithm and 3-D printed off the internet" way (cough cough Greta Van Fleet). I am a huge Pearl Jam fan, and the youthful explosion of raw energy present at their performances was what I imagined 1992 Pearl Jam felt like (not that I would know unfortunately...born about 10-15 years too late).

I will caveat that they are a band that comes across much better live than in the studio (their production is a bit muted / overly polished to me vs their live show which is so raw) so I am gonna link a few live videos below.

It is also really cool how they seemed to have "democratized" the songwriting process a bit. It is mentioned in the KEXP video below, but the first three songs in the video were sung/written by different band members - yet feel extremely cohesive. The other song linked "In The Meadow" was sung/written by a 4th member.

From the KEXP session, the highlight / "if you watch only one video":

"In The Meadow", Thalia Hall Chicago (great venue):

Cheers and enjoy the weekend NYR brethren...

I tend to gravitate towards musicians with distinct sounds, especially if those sounds are influenced by jazz, blues, or big band. Love stuff like The Pretenders, the cranberries, Joan Osbourne, Jamie Cullum, Natalie Merchant, etc.

During the holidays, on a drive through Baltimore, I heard a song by a brand new singer named Joy Postell. Phenomenal stuff. The whole album is great. Elements of jazz, R and B, and a whole bunch of other stuff. I can hear elements of Nina Simone, Lauryn Hill, a bit of Ella Fitzgerald. Great stuff. Her sound feels a bit raw/unfocused still, but by her 2nd or 3rd album, I think a lot of folks are going to know her name. On the album I just picked up, I particularly recommend: "Water," "Hyd," and "Consciousness."

2nd Lollapalooza, 1992. Pearl Jam on stage. Utterly fantastic.

The whole show was ridiculous. Chilli Peppers, Soundgarden, Ice Cube, Jesus Mary Chain, Ice T with Body Count, Stone Temple Pilots, Rage against the Machine. Cypress Hill on side stage, along with Smashing Pumpkins & House of Pain. Utterly ridiculous.

Going to Jazzfest in New Orleans this year. Anxiously awaiting the lineup announcement. Hoping it's not country dominated.

Right now it's Bantering the Blueshirts. The first of three podcasts I'll be listening to at work. The others will be Blueshirts Breakaway and Blueshirt Underground. It's a good time to be a fan.

Covers: What's the best one you heard?

I know that Hendrix doing Watchtower is great and better than the original. But that aside.

Metallica's "Turn the Page". Confession: I like it better than the original. They almost made it in to a different song.

Obvious ones:
"Respect" - Aretha's cover of an Otis Redding song
"Hallelujah" - Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's song

Personal choices:

"Hurt" - Johnny Cash's over of the Nine Inch Nail's song
" Last Kiss" - Pear Jam's cover of Wayne Cochran's song
"Back in the High Life Again" - Warren Zevon's cover of the Steve Winwood song
"Jolene"" - The White Stripes cover of the Dolly Parton song
"Scarlet Begonias" - Sublime cover of the Grateful Dead song
