What would you trade Larkin for... a thought exercise

Except that Ehlers is actually good. Berggren doesn't do much even when he does get an opportunity.
Berggren put up 15 goals and 28 points in his rookie season. He was rewarded by demotion to the AHL due to lack of defensive prowess. He put up 12 goals and 24 points this year but improved his +/- by 1.

He’s an offensive (though not great) player. He’s not the two way player the Wings want everyone to be.

He's also not that good of an offensive player. Good players force their way up, regardless who is on the team.

Fair. But I would argue that when you are put in a more non-offensive role or position, you might not be able to. Berggren was always a more offensive type player. Why draft and force him to be two way?

Jiri Hudler says hi. Beat both Datsyuk and Zetterberg and finished top 10 league wide in scoring when a team put him on the top line. And the experts here swore up and down that he simply wasn't any good.

Okay, now tell about the other 99%.

He's not even playing in the Worlds.

Berggren's problem will never be about scoring prowess, he's okay there. His complete inability to get the puck out of his own zone when given the opportunity as well as his lack of strength will hold him back. Wingers have to get the puck out of their zone. You can't allow a pinching D to beat you even 50% of the time. He's very weak there.

The league is littered with forwards on scoring lines no better than Berggren in those aspects. Some on the current Wings...

Tell us more about Jiri Hudler's one fantastic (sort of) season. Tell us about the contract dispute with the Red Wings that led him to the KHL too. And then back to Detroit because he was released by the KHL team.

Is your idea just to give Berggren a spot on the top line and just leave him there forever, regardless of outcome ... because Jiri Hudler once existed?

Who should he replace? ... Lucas Raymond, Alex Debrincat, Patrick Kane, or Marco Kasper. Perhaps the FA winger most hope the Red Wings sign?

A young center with upside like a Byfield, McTavish or Beniers, or a really good center prospect+. Maybe such as a Lindstrom or Catton.

I'm gonna guess they wouldn't be able to land that.
I’m not dying to trade Larkin, but I’m also not totally against it. His postgame interviews are rough—he always looks like a sad puppy.

That said, I’d be all over a deal for Beniers. The only concern is chemistry with Seider. Every time we play Seattle, those two are in each other’s faces—it always feels way more intense than a regular-season game.

As for Larkin’s value, it depends on whether the public knows he wants out. That could definitely affect the return.

If Beniers isn’t realistic (and I think Seattle should add, even if they won’t), I’d look at Kempe. He’s not a center, which complicates things, but I’d still love to have him. Larkin would fit LA’s two-way style perfectly—they might at least consider it.

A one-for-one swap for Forsberg could also be interesting. No adds—just a hockey trade. Maybe even throw in Tarasenko? I think he’ll bounce back, but Forsberg clearly moves the needle more.

I’ve always said we should help the Rangers out and take Kreider off their hands—cap relief and all that. Not sure where they stand now, but Bultman mentioned it recently.

If we land a Kreider-type—gritty, playoff-tested, net-front presence with 20+ goals—and add someone like Bennett (though he probably stays in Florida), we’d be in great shape. Still need to figure out the blue line, and a Talbot/Mrazek tandem probably gets us into the playoffs. Not a deep run, but I’ll take it.

McTavish and Solberg for Larkin

Straight up.
I don't hate this at all.

Solberg is going to be elite top 4 sooner rather than later in his career...but does he crack the lineup next year? In ANA i'm sure, but with how we do things, is he going to be? Helps that he is a lefty so he doesn't take ASP's spot if he makes it.

Imagine?

Solberg - Seider
Ed - ASP
Gavrikov - ALJO

Split the pairings how you will but god damn that is a defensive corps that could last for a very a long time. Has everything you need: grit, elite skating, puck-moving, PP specialists. My god Ogee, I think I just felt my di** move! (dodgeball)

Of course Larkin is better than Beniers , but second one is only 22 and will improve

Gavrikov is going to cost roughly $8 million per year to sign. He's not coming her to play on the 3rd pairing and you can't pay that much for a 3rd pairing guy.

Wow, another completely different player really proves your point. Watching Berggren play and he isn't as good as Hudler.

Anyone who pays him that will regret it. He is not good enough offensively to be an $8 million dollar guy. Slavin is a better defenceman and he is getting 6.395 starting next year. Gavrikov is hitting UFA which will bump up what he is worth, but 7 is more than fair for what he brings.
