I selected B-.
I don’t hate any particular trade, but much of thinking behind what we needed and how to achieve it was flawed, in my opinion.
Between the ROR/Acciari trade (grade: B+), and the McCabe/Lafferty (grade: A) trade, we spent enough assets that meant we were going for it. Given that, I am disappointed that we could not address what I thought was our primary need going into the deadline, which was a 2LW. As much as I like ROR, his offence seems to be in decline, and both him and Tavares are probably too slow to be effective together over an extended playoff run. I hope I am wrong.
I also would have preferred Dubas just stopped after those two trades. Trading Sandin for a late 1st plus a rental D was questionable (grade: D+). He’s a 22yo defenseman, signed for another year at a reasonable rate on a cap-strapped team. His value to us is more than a late 1st, although I acknowledge that being scratched in the playoffs (as he was likely to be) may have burned whatever bridges remained between him and the Leafs.
Even if it was necessary to deal Sandin, I would have felt better had we gotten an additional 2nd or decent prospect rather than Gustafson. As I said in last night’s GDT, I do not understand why he is on this team, especially after the Schenn/Engvall deals (grades: C-). We passed up draft picks and moved a top 9 forward (Engvall) out our roster in order to add an 8th and 9th NHL defenseman.
The explanation that Dubas gave this afternoon for these moves does not make sense. No, we do not need 9 NHL defensemen for depth. In the unlikely event of losing half our defense core, then at that point I would be fine with Jordie Benn or Mac Hollowell drawing in as the #6D. We also did not need a PP specialist. Our PP is driven by our forwards. A veteran D like Gio or Brodie could be passably effective back there if Mo went down. And if super-pressed for an offensively-inclined D in that role, Conor Timmins could have drawn in.
This deadline felt a lot like the Foligno deadline. Not in results, as the players coming back now are far superior, but in management going overboard for supposed depth (remember Rittich for a 3rd?) and leaving unaddressed our need for offensive depth (again, ROR may be the solution here, but I am not convinced). Overall, not bad, but not great either, hence the B.
