Joel Quenville is 2nd all time in wins with 969 and 3 Stanley Cups to his name. If/when he comes back into the league and if he wins another 2+ Cups then it starts to get interesting.
Coaching is strange though, i'm not sure what makes some guys better than others. Bowman coached the: Dynasty Era Habs in the 70's with way less competition and Montreal was a powerhouse, the 92 Penguins with Mario f***ing Lemieux on that super team, and some of the best teams ever assembled in with the Wings in a pre-cap era.
Does he win the Cups in 94/95 coaching the Chicago Blackhawks instead of the Wings? Does he win in 98 coaching the Blues?
I never thought Cooper to be a particularly impressive coach, actually found him to be quite arrogant and obnoxious more often than not. He's got two Cups behind two stacked teams over the salary cap. When the roster dwindled in 2022 the Lightning got smoked by a much superior Avs team. What does that mean for Cooper?
Trotz could never get the Preds past the best teams in the West, all of a sudden he goes to Washington and they win a Cup. I never thought Laviolette to be a particularly good coach either. The Hawks beat his Flyers in 2010 and Preds in 2015, yet in 2017 as the Hawks roster thinned way the hell out and the Preds were rolling they swept chicago and embarassed Quenville. Does that make Laviolette a great coach?
IDK it seems very, very, very tied to how strong of a team you have in front of you as well as your ability to not get in the way of the roster you're coaching.
