Speculation: What would it take…?

Seriously? As a Bostonian born and bred, I live and hope for good times and endure the bad times. I don't just turn my back during tough times. I find it inconceivable. It does not compute. And that means Celtics Bruins Red Sox Patriots, BC, Roxbury Titans, the Fleet............

If it ever got really, really bad, I would just tune out the NHL entirely. I don't know what the breaking point would have to be though. As bad as this season was, I still followed along but with a great deal of indifference.

This post makes me wonder: what would it take for you to say “f*** the Bruins. I’m done”? Even more, what would have to happen for you to switch allegiances? Who would your new team be? Would you thow your bruins gear in the trash or burn it?

What would your breaking point be? And don’t say you don’t have one. Everyone does.
I'm too old and have too much time invested in being a Bruins fan to quit being a Bruins fan

..although

if the reffing gets any worse and/or the league keeps making it harder and harder and much more expensive to watch games, I can see myself becoming less interested

If I ever did reach my breaking point (which is unlikely since I stayed loyal for 39 years between 1972 and 2011), I wouldn't burn or trash a perfectly good jersey or memorabilia when I could make some extra cash on the side by selling them

The closest thing for me was the Mitchell Miller debacle. That hit close to home and I'm still pissed at B's management for taking the fifth on who made the decision. But I learned long ago to move on and understand that people make terrible decisions but that I shouldn't let it affect me to an unhealthy extent. So I remain a diehard Bruins fan.

If they do something stupid that sets the franchise back a decade like trading Pasta for nothing or blowing a high draft pick I might throw in the towel for a while.

I can’t think of a breaking point. The B’s will always be my team. I may feel less attached to certain iterations but I will always be a Bruins fan.

I’d never burn a jersey. I think that’s dumb.

As for who my teams would be IF I wasn’t a Bruins fan, I guess Philadelphia as I’ve always loved their sweaters and liked their culture. Chicago as I was huge Ed Belfour fan and he made me want to be a goalie. Or even St. Louis as we had season tickets to the Ice Cats when I was a kid so I had a vested interest in the guys that made the big club.

Realistically, I’d never stop being a Bruins fan. Even upon the loss of all of my mental faculties. It’s in my bone marrow.

But I WOULD tune out under certain circumstances. Came close not too long ago when they announced the signing of Mitch Miller. Anything adjacent to that, I’d be out for a while.

Yeah that would be the one thing that could make me turn away - management or ownership doing something incredibly unethical but then still remaining in place. I'd probably be out until those responsible were gone. I can't imagine exactly what though. The Miller situation was bad but didn't have me on the brink in itself, as it were, probably helped that in the end it was resolved fairly quickly.

Otherwise you stick with your team. Good and bad, ups and downs. That's the way of it.

I think for the dudes in this video it was the 17th shot of tequila. Maybe the 16th. Hard to tell.

Isn't one for me. Just isn't. God help me.

I had a breaking point where I no longer pour myself emotionally into them (R1 against FLA in 23). But I wont stop being a fan unless something outrageous happens, cartoonishly outrageous, like the whole organization top to bottom going hey we're neo-nazis or something outlandish.

I am not sure that there is anything in terms of on ice performance that would get me to stop being a fan, but management turning a blind to unethical behavior and not doing anything to address it is the only thing I can think of that would make me stop following the team

I came close back in 2006-2007. They made all those changes and they still stunk. I asked myself why do I cheer for this team.

Now? I'd stop watching hockey before I'd give up on the Bruins and cheer for a different team.

On a side note, burning $200 hockey jerseys over the outcome a season is flat out bonkers. If you don't want 'em, send them to me I'll whack them up up on Ebay and make a dollar.

Because it's your team?

i remember running into Rod Brind'amour at the grocery store a few days after the bruins won in 2011. it was like a saturday or sunday afternoon and the place was empty. passing the apples and oranges he looks at me and see's my B's hat. he lifts his head and makes contact with a "bandwagon"? i laughed and said "no rod, i came out of my mom (1961) wearing a spoked b". he cracked up on that one. still feel the same and it will never change.

Bruins will always be my team, but I've stopped watching and going to games before, and I'll do it again if the product sucks.

And burning jerseys is just stupid. Unless you stole the damn thing, you aren't hurting the team or the organization, you are hurting your own wallet. Leave it up to moron Leafs fans to not realize that fact.

That guy is going to be so pissed when he sobers up and realizes he just set $500 dollars on fire.

It's impossible. I had the chance to jump ship in 1982 at the age of 13 when the Devils began but still stuck with them and seeing them only a few times a year on TV. Didn't have cable until 1984.

People divorce spouses, become estranged with kids but never turn their backs on their team. It's a weird thing.

Lying about the signing of Mitch Miller made me consider it.
