What was the Point of Benching Brayden?

Honestly coaches should come up with a punishment other than sitting the player for a game. Just bag skate him hard at the next practice.

Benching one of your best players and perhaps losing the game because of it doesn't seem worth it and it's not like Tampa is in a secured playoff spot.

Really?I think it is self explanatory but it is because there are only a few hundred pro athletes in each sport that are very specialized at what they do. When is the lady time paid to watch a teacher teach? A doctor perform surgery? A librarian put away books? I could go on...

Thread title sounds like an angry email from his mom to the coach
How did you know???

Finally a voice of reason! Agreed.

When it's team rules it's always about the team and not the individual. Bagskating someone or fining one would only be about the individual.

It's simple shit really and it truly is tried by fire. YOU f*** up, WE have to pick up the slack, YOU feel bad, WE become stronger.

Treating people differently based on their skill level within an organization is a great way to send all kinds of wrong messages.

The point , pun intended, is it was not some random 3rd or 4th liner who got benched. he made an example of a star player and the team proceeded to get smoked in their game

What happened in the game is probably the least important fact here. Cooper didn't do it to motivate his team for this game. You stick by your rules because it gives your organization strength over the long run.

Cooper on scratching Point after missing a team meeting.

"We've had a standard since I've been here ... It's professional sports and you've got rules and nobody's above the law. It's unfortunate because this game we could have really needed him, but the one that probably feels the worst about it is Pointer."
Wonder what the Pointer sisters think about this, are they excited?

He sets a standard on the team. He’s also benched Kucherov and I believe Stamkos for extended periods mid game too.

He’s a great coach, players coach like a Keefe, except he actually will do the tough guy bit and bench a star without hesitation and without apology or defense to the media if they deserve it.

It appears that is what he did by sitting him. I am interested to see the long term effect on the dynamic between player and coach.

Wow. Not sure why you are making this personal but I have a job with very real responsibilities. We cannot compare pro sports to typical jobs. It is not even close to the same.

I doubt it otherwise this wouldn't be so hard for you to wrap your head around.

I am surprised that Jon Cooper would bench his number one centre before inter-division game! I think it took balls but what does it accomplish? He is also coaching him in the 4 Country Cup.
It obviously did not sit well with the Bolts who laid an egg rather than responding to their coaches decisive move.

I'm kind of puzzled by the question.

This is a team and no player is more important than the team, and no player is above the rules of the club.

There are consequences, no matter who you are, and Point needed to face those consequences.

He broke the rules, so he was left out of the lineup and he let his team down.

Lesson learned and the rest of the players have to respect a coach and his staff that doesn't put up with blatant infractions regardless of who they are.

They are the players boss, if you missed mandatory meetings at work what happens to you?
Nothing anymore nowadays lol…. Hence why some get confused by people needing to be held accountable for their actions. It’s foreign for many people!

I missed a team meeting once and got benched for the new kid on the fry station and he messed up so badly, the manager had to give a few customers free McFlurries. I learned from my mistake because, not because young blood burned the fries, but because I had to clean the McFlurry machine.

You didn’t answer the question, likely because there is no reasonable explanation for your mistaken belief that having a job as a professional athlete should exempt them from rules which drive personal accountability.

I did not know it was a test lol Pro athletes do not work a typical 9 to 5 job. They highly paid "young adults" for the most part under 30 who have always been treated wit ha silver spoon and to be above the rules growing up. I m not saying they should not be held accountable because they are in many ways be it contracts, ice time etc. I just questioned why Cooper would bench over missing a meeting for full game. He must have done something really bad.

If this has a long term effect of the dynamic between Point and Cooper then Point is a hell of a lot more mentally weak then we all thought.
I never thought of him as mentally weak. I think to sit a player for the full game means this was not the first offence and there is more to it.

It is not a question more just looking for opinions.

Cooper certainly held him to task. I wonder if this was a first offence?

I’ve always wondered with these situations whether there’s ever an adequate excuse. Like what if he was in a car accident? Or saved a woman from a burning building? Or developed a case of gigantism from drinking a toxic elixir? Or was hypnotized into believing he was a chicken?

I think the best thing an Organization can do is treat the best and worse players with the same respect.

Brayden Point gets paid big bucks. For all we know he could have been late a few times. Cooper held him responsible.

Zion was suspended for missing the flight. He has done it w few times. New Orleans in in NBA suspended him for a game.

You'd assume there's a call or text made in those situations and it's excused due to unforeseen circumstances in almost every case of these missed meeting benching's the player has no excuse and accepts responsibility.

Coop only has 2 SC rings. If only TB had OP as their coach, surely they’d have 3 or 4.
He also has a law degree. He must be genius. This is a tough crowd . I am simply looking for opinions but they are like aholes. Everyone has one and can act like one.

He does have a lot of experience and has won the cup multiple times. I do believe he knows what works and what doesn’t.
