What was the Point of Benching Brayden?

I am surprised that Jon Cooper would bench his number one centre before inter-division game! I think it took balls but what does it accomplish? He is also coaching him in the 4 Country Cup.
It obviously did not sit well with the Bolts who laid an egg rather than responding to their coaches decisive move.

That no 1 player is bigger then the team. Point should not be missing meetings.

Cooper has done things like this before. A few years ago, he sat the entire Stamkos-Point-Kucherov line against a lottery team for an entire period. It didn't really help then either.

He said it haunts him but it makes me wonder what the player/coach relationship is really like on NHL teams. Are they coaches or baby sitters?

Most employees are not making millions of dollars but if I missed a meeting with a good reason I would like to think my boss would understand and not dock me pay.
Perhaps, the reason for missing is the issue not missing it.

It's just a policy. Some coaches are stricter than others on it. Seems the opposite of baby sitting, imo, as rather than being dragged around by this or that player you have a clear line and you enforce it.

There are 22 other guys in that room. So you tell Point he doesn’t need to worry about breaking the rules, what are you gonna tell Kucherov? Go down that road and eventually you have to crack down on some scapegoat rookie and you lose both the rookie and the room.

It seems to go without saying that Point didn’t have a legit reason to miss the meeting. Obviously he wouldn’t be benched for having the flu or for having a family crisis. He made a mistake, there was a consequence attached. If there’s an ongoing problem about it, the problem will be with Point.

Rules are in place for a reason and they have to be enforced equally.

The team probably laid an egg at least in part because they were unexpectedly missing their #1 center.

If that doesn’t motivate Point to elevate the team next time, what else would?

First of all, the two late ENGs make it look worse than it was. It was a 4-2 game until then.

Regardless, this isn't the first time the Lightning have lost a game in a convincing manner, and Point played in most of those games. Bad games happen sometimes. It is what it is. "Subterfuge" or whatever is just nonsense thinking with nothing to support it.

Ok, but what I’m saying is that in a team environment it’s going to backfire just as badly to enforce rules differently just because someone is a “star”.
