What to do with Nate Schmidt?

Not after 20-30 games.

Let's sign matt Hendricks!!
There is a buy out period in the summer.
You can't buy out a player mid-season.
If we were allowed to buy him out now, the hit would be much higher.

Hell no!
I'd probably give our 2nd in 2025 to dump Schmidt right now but not adding and certainly not for Barrie.
meh if he doesn't play well we can scratch him, he makes less then schmidt and more importantly comes off the books after this season and the add doesn't even need to be anything good

schmidt + mtl 2nd + something for barrie
Not sure Barrie is an upgrade on Schmidt? Maybe a saw off? Makes less and has an expiring contract. Depends if you value a high second round pick more or less than the lost cap space of a Schmidt buyout in the off season.

Barrie is better offensively but worse defensively.
He wouldn't qb the PP here though.
I'd trade them straight up with 550k retained.

it's really not about barrie at all and more about getting out of the final year of schmidt's contract

If it was just Schmidt for Barrie I'd be all over it. The question for me is it better or worse for the team to lose a high 2nd round pick or lose the cap space buying out the final year of Schmidt's contract?

A 2nd still seems pretty cheap for two years of 6 mil...

If the question is, what are we going to do with him? What can we do besides buy him out. No one is buying a 2nd round pick for that much dough.

We went through the org playing hardball getting a return on a deal for Wheeler. I imagine this will end similarly.

It is pretty cheap but I am not willing to go a first round pick. I agree that he gets bought out this summer.
I would definitely wave him once Ville gets back though.

I don't see us doing anything with Nate until next year. This (below) was the cost to move Steve Mason and his 4.1 mill contract for one year. It's not hard to imagine the ask of a 1st or one of our top forward prospects to take on his contract. Note: his cap hit is 5.95 next year, but his salary is 4.85

Personally, my preference is to put him on waivers and send him down next year. If the cap is tight, I think Iafallo becomes a luxury that can go (in a separate trade) to make room for Rutger (I'm hoping).

A buyout is another discussion.

Conversation is not about a buyout.
Sorry, I misunderstood.
As to your comment about retaining 50% would only cost just under 2m...it would cost 2.975m next year (you retain for the length of the ontract, not one year) making it more expensive than a buyout.

Ah I thought it was just for the year of the trade - 30% probably gets it done

Regardless I really would be trying to get kova for a Schmidt type of deal... sell it as a locker room guy for the kids

We always seem to forget that someone needs to dance around inside the Mick E Moose suit… I mean, if Schmidt ain’t doing anything in the press box, he could assume that role. I always thought it was perfect for Mark Stuart at the tail end of his tenure. He could run around trying to hit something, and the fans would be entertained while the chance of the puck ending up in the back of our net would go down dramatically.

I like to see him in the 4 th line…,

Or….

We have a good trade history with Arizona…..

Over the summer we trade we trade 88 @ 50./ an 4 th round pick and the rights to Rachevsky. The yotes like Russians recently and our currently waiting for 4 highly drafted Ruskies….

- It’s only 2.5 mill real cash for Arizona and a 3 mill cap… to help them reach the floor/ Smitty will shine in the desert and if the yotes retain at the deadline next year Smitty is worth an asset…. Just like the Gothisberg deal with Philly …

For the rest of this year …. When vH comes back from injury….

Send 88 to the Moose and pair him with Capo..( 7 mill top pairing D unit in the AHL)!

Sometimes I believe we over think things. Not surprised Jets just play out his contract and just use him as injury depth.

Schmidt has been inconsistent but he’s still far better than Stanley.
Stanley should not be on this club period.
I believe he plays out his contract here.

It's been mentioned but there is no question in my mind that Heinola due back soon(though he can be sent to the minors), Chisholm showing he can play, that Stanley being in the lineup is an attempt by the Jets to show teams that he can play. Tough to work a trade of a player if you can't show the confidence in him to play him in your own lineup.

Someone on the right side has to sit of course and of DeMelo, Pionk and Schmidt, the latter has been the one who's game has had the most seriously holes in it this season so far, so he sits. Unless something else happened behind the scenes to cement him into the doghouse for a time but that seems unlikely.

You never can have enough D depth as far as I'm concerned, and in years past we've seen that come to the fore when injuries on the back end have forced us to dredge the deepest pits, down past the mushy middle to bring in waiver wire types that were just bad.

If when the time comes where there are just too many healthy bodies and Stanley can't be traded and the Jets are reluctant to waive him then I think you waive Schmidt(no one will take that contract) so he can go to the Moose and at least play and be ready if the time comes that we need him.

Heinola had virtually made the team at the time of his injury and when he's ready to come back sending him down for anything other than a short conditioning stint might prove to do more bad than good in terms of Ville's psyche. He's RFA at the end of this season and while we still have control another "demotion" to the AHL because of a logjam might make him balk at wanting to return. I'd rather him here than either Stanley or Schmidt.

And while we need to resign DeMelo I am also very much in the camp of wanting to bring Brendan Dillon back unless we intend to replace him with someone who can be physical like him.
