Speculation: What to do about goalies

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version. Click Here for Updates
I wouldn’t be completely opposed to keeping Skinner as a backup. He’s a local guy, just had his 2nd baby. He can be better than average but he’s just so inconsistent. Lessen his workload, get a legit starter, maybe he can develop as a goalie a bit with less pressure.

Maybe he’s a bit overpaid for a backup but I do like the guy and if the rest of the team does too then he could be worth keeping around, you need 2 goalies anyway.
But then you don't have cap space to fix the top 6.

We could have pulled up Rodrique instead of Ryan to see what we have there. Can he be worse than the goaltending we've been getting? And do you think Buffalo would move UPL?

Well, if there was a reasonable deal for a goalie with 1yr left, you can let Picard go knowing Rod needs a shot anyways unless said rental is a notable upgrade.

Skinner has 18 games above .910, 18 games below .899 and 3 games between .900 - .909. His QS% is 51%, the average for this season is 53%. He's negative in almost all important advanced stats.

Based on the info, he's been Jackyl & Hyde this season. Only 3 games of .900 - .909 is alarming for a supposed starter.

Pickard's QS% is 63%. His advanced stats really aren't that much better or worse. But atleast he's been more consistent.

I wonder if because all the media is now crapping on Skinner it will force managements hand at all? for two reasons:

1. Skinner's confidence might be crap now.
2. If Goaltending does fail in the playoffs will management get out of this alive?

Management doesn't care. As long as Dustin Schwartz tells them it's fine, it's fine. And they won't fire this idiot, so we're just going to spin on this hamster wheel until somebody croaks.

Posted in the other thread, but applicable here too, here is Devan Dubnyk, an actual NHL goalie who knows what he's talking about breaking down some of Skinner's problems on Oilersnation:

Turn over is terrible yes, but this shouldn't be an auto goal either, Skinner is piss poor at reading plays and understanding where the real danger is.

I’m cautiously optimistic that the hush hush from management on goaltending is strategic rather than real. Don’t want to throw another weight on their shoulders talking about pursuing one.

There is just no way that this management group can shrug their shoulders and ignore it. These aren’t stupid or disorganized people running the team anymore.
I'm hoping the same - that the "we aren't trading for a goalie" is being done in an effort to curb other teams holding our feet over the fire for an upgrade.

Q: What to do about goalies?

A: Get one.
Yep. It's almost time to take Old Yeller out behind the barn here.

Pretty much all HDSCA becomes a GA with Skinner
