The Oilers had a 13 year sellout streak (until the pandemic ended it), during which they had a 10 year stretch without making the playoffs. When over half the teams are going to miss the playoffs, you probably shouldn’t expand to a market where missing the playoffs will result in the team folding
Maybe if the Trashers had won five Stanley Cups, rather than having zero playoff wins, things would have worked out better in Atlanta. Maybe the Atlanta Spirit Group would have even been interested in keeping the team had that been the case.

I don’t care what they’re named (as long as it’s the Thrashers) but Jermaine Dupri has to perform Welcome to Atlanta before the first home opener.

Atlanta Spirit Group NEVER wanted the team. It was the only way the Atlanta Spirit Group could get the Hawks and Phillips Arena. It was a package deal.

Look. If you don't know what happened, just don't comment on it. It's pretty simple.

The Thrashers had one playoff appearance, zero playoff wins, and an ownership group that had no interest owning an NHL team or finding an owner who would want to keep the team in Atlanta, which caused people in Atlanta to not want to spend money on tickets. What is it that I don't know?

I know Atlanta Spirit Group didn't want the Thrashers, but you never know if they would have thought differently had the team been successful. The Oilers would likely have moved from Edmonton if they had been as unsuccessful as the Thrashers.

That's not how you framed it.

First of all, The spirit group took over the team prior to the 06 season. So they had some success but chose not to pursue it since they had no interest in the Thrashers.

Second of all, the group was basically Turner 2.0 with most the group having strong ties to him.

Thrashers were always an after thought. None of the owners cared to make them competitive so what you are presenting is circular argument.

This is an absolutely remarkable thread.

I would say maybe 65 percent of the posts are "joke" answers and not a single one is funny.

That's incredible.

Even funnier is that there is a lot of "3rd times the charm"-jokes is from people who support a team in Quebec. A place that already has had two teams as well...
