Player Discussion What should the Canucks do with Miller and Pettersson?

What trade options should the team pursue?

Trade neither if the Canucks wants to contend, put Miller/Pettersson on the first line, depends on who is performing better. The loser plays on the third line, until he outplayed the other player.

Miller has a full-no-trade contract and can pick wherever team he goes to. And Pettersson makes $11.7m a season and is badly underperforming his contract.

Neither guy is going anywhere imo, unless Rutherford and Allvin are willing to get absolutely scalped in any deal.

Rutherford has suggested that the Miller-Pettersson breakdown shouldn't impact the team on the ice. Is he whistling past the graveyard? Possibly. But maybe he's right.

Back in the day, when Billy Martin managed the Yankees, everybody seem to hate everybody in the dressing room. And the owner George Steinbrenner disrespected his manager and just about everybody in the entire organization. And I'm sure there are other examples of teams that loathed each other, but went out on the field or on the ice and parked it enough to win.

The only shame is that one of the best seasons by a single player in franchise history--Quinn Hughes--is being overshadowed by this soap opera.

I voted trade Pettersson but only because his NMC hasn't kicked in yet and I don't think he will ever live up to that contract. Trade now while he has value and we don't have to retain as much. Still very open to keeping him, as well as trading Miller if the price is right. Management has totally messed this whole situation up. Best case scenario we get our shit together and get on a bit of a heater and sweep this all under the rug (I don't think it will happen but I remain optimistic).

Unfortunately I don't see a way Canucks can be a legit contender either way.
Miller needs to go. EP can stay, but he's mentally too weak (and maybe physically too) to be the 1C that will lead the charge through playoffs when it gets tough.

Trade Miller or trade both, either way sets the team back at least a full season to find ways to replace the holes, never mind actually improving the team.
This team is doomed with this core. Maybe Petey will have another 100 pt season and disappear in the playoffs or have another bad season after a good one. It's becoming too predictable that this is just who he is. In the grand scheme, I kind of expect him to put up 4 elite seasons out of the 8 he signed for. So if the team keeps him, go in with that expectation.

Winning can certainly ease the tension but guys like Miller are just exhausting to be around. It gets to the point that the tension doesn't get eased nearly as much even with winning.

The most recent example would be the Jets room a few seasons ago. It happens and at some point you need to deal with it and the "difficult" player will be the one moved. That seems to be Miller.

Trade Miller asap for best reasonable offer, enough is enough.

Monitor Pettersson for the remainder of the season and fully understand his issues (knee? Mental?) and whatever went on last summer. If you decide he won’t get back to the player he can be, trade in the offseason before his NMC kicks in. This would probably be the worst possible outcome.

Trade management/coaching. This thing doesn't snowball without their ineptitude.

If we overlook the fact that they should have nipped this in the butt ages ago, just the way this season was handled has really destroyed whatever chances they had of fixing things.
  • Knowing everything they knew, asking JT to "toughen up" EP may be the absolute dumbest thing...ever!
  • Zero glue guys or leaders brought in to replace Schenn/Cole/Pearson types
  • "Leave of absence" instead of just saying he was injured really put the feud into the forefront
  • Allvin/Rutherford interviews
  • That whole separate PP stunt by Tocc

I voted trade Miller in the off-season, but it's also because we're getting garbage offers for both. This season is already shot. Unless it's entirely toxic in the change room, in which case, jettison Miller into the sun.

This doesn't leave Pettersson without blame, and still leaves him open to movement before his clauses kick in. Neither have handled this well, but I think Miller rubs more people the wrong way over time, and he's just older.
