The captain turns 31 in February and will be 32 years old at the expiration of his current deal (this year and next at $7.5M/year). Maybe it is just Covid that has slowed him down and a bounce-back is coming, but he's struggled a bit compared to the extraordinary level of play he's provided to this point. And while he may age like a fine wine, Father Time is undefeated and eventually comes for all. No doubt the Blues want him back; their Center-depth isn't great young and there would be a huge hole in the lineup without #90.
But...
...how long and for how many dollars would you be comfortable signing the guy? Is there déjà vu in store for us; where we watch the Captain walk in UFA because somebody else was offering more term and/or dollars? After watching Backes and Petro walk, would the Blues let #90 do the same...or would they dare entertain the notion of moving him if he's not re-signed by next year's trade deadline? They did it with Stastny...why wouldn't they consider it with his buddy ROR? ROR's camp has hard-lined negotiations in the past...why would there be any reason to think this upcoming negotiation would be different?
For a 32-year old, sure-to-fade center I don't know that I'm backing up the Brinks truck. With Tarasenko likely leaving town, the money will most likely be there to re-sign ROR; but if he's seeking similar money on four or more years, I don't know if that's an investment I'd be happy seeing the Blues make. Granted there's a lot of time left before that decision has to be made...but what would you (1) want to see on ROR's next deal with the Blues...and (2) what percentage would you put on his camp accepting that deal?
If he maintains his current play through the end of his contract; or averages 25-45-70 with solid defense and leadership, what is that worth for somebody who'd turn 33 in Yr 1 of his next deal?

$8M x 3-years might be my limit and I can't see him taking that, to be honest. 5 yrs x $5.5M if he wants term, but that too may not be enough.
