What Should the Blues do with ROR's next contract?

The captain turns 31 in February and will be 32 years old at the expiration of his current deal (this year and next at $7.5M/year). Maybe it is just Covid that has slowed him down and a bounce-back is coming, but he's struggled a bit compared to the extraordinary level of play he's provided to this point. And while he may age like a fine wine, Father Time is undefeated and eventually comes for all. No doubt the Blues want him back; their Center-depth isn't great young and there would be a huge hole in the lineup without #90.

But...

...how long and for how many dollars would you be comfortable signing the guy? Is there déjà vu in store for us; where we watch the Captain walk in UFA because somebody else was offering more term and/or dollars? After watching Backes and Petro walk, would the Blues let #90 do the same...or would they dare entertain the notion of moving him if he's not re-signed by next year's trade deadline? They did it with Stastny...why wouldn't they consider it with his buddy ROR? ROR's camp has hard-lined negotiations in the past...why would there be any reason to think this upcoming negotiation would be different?

For a 32-year old, sure-to-fade center I don't know that I'm backing up the Brinks truck. With Tarasenko likely leaving town, the money will most likely be there to re-sign ROR; but if he's seeking similar money on four or more years, I don't know if that's an investment I'd be happy seeing the Blues make. Granted there's a lot of time left before that decision has to be made...but what would you (1) want to see on ROR's next deal with the Blues...and (2) what percentage would you put on his camp accepting that deal?

If he maintains his current play through the end of his contract; or averages 25-45-70 with solid defense and leadership, what is that worth for somebody who'd turn 33 in Yr 1 of his next deal?

$8M x 3-years might be my limit and I can't see him taking that, to be honest. 5 yrs x $5.5M if he wants term, but that too may not be enough.

Im not too sure. His contract ends right as Kyrou and Thomas needs extentions, as well as Sunny, Barbie, and Tarasenko(if he's still here), and one year before the predicted significant Salary Cap increase.

I feel like he is a candidate for the $6.5M "Army Special" but I can understand why he and his representation would balk at that. I can't necessarily see us letting another captain walk, but I feel like his wheels could fall off any year now and I would be reluctant to give him more than his current $7.5M for more than 2-3 years. I'd be hard pressed to find a term and AAV that both sides are going to be happy with.

I would comfortable giving him more years for a lower cap hit. Something at the 5-6 year range. Something like what Bergeron got in Boston, frontloaded in the early years and falling off in the later years for a cap hit somewhere between 6-7 million.

Yes, I believe all blues vets are required to sign for 6.5mm per.

It would be nice.

I think the dollar amount is really going to hinge on production of ROR the next year and half. I also think that the Blues are not in a position to let him walk. It would be our 3rd captain leaving for UFA in the last decade. Not a good look. I think if he wants the money, you say fine but you keep the years low but if he is willing to take a bit of discount we give him the security of a longer termed contact.

I’d trade him this off season for Matthew Tkachuk. I would not resign and watch him age before our eyes. He clearly has been a valuable player, however, if Tkachuk has decided not to resign with Calgary we should make a major push for him. It seems he would like to come home and play here. Make it happen.

I love ROR and Perron, but I think we’ll regret their extensions in a couple years.
I love Perron and recognize his body shouldn’t betray him like Steen/Backes, but part of me is always a little scared given his concussion history.

ROT I’m fine with doing $7 mil x 5 years. I think he’ll age similarly to Bergeron or Krejci.

ROR has a history of being a hardliner when signing contracts. I think he's gonna want the big bucks.

Lets just not sign any player to an extension once they hit 30. I swear anytime the Blues sign any player to a contract that takes them past the age of 33 everyone on this board assumes that we will regret that extension:laugh:

Colorado was a unique situation where business got personal and both sides refused to budge on their demands. But he signed an extension pretty quickly when Buffalo traded for him, when he could’ve waited a year to hit UFA status instead. Tim Murray even admitted he hadn’t had any contract discussions with ROR’s camp prior to the trade. Being in a good place and feeling appreciated are important to this player, for better or worse.

Personally, I can’t see ROR hunting for the top dollar with his next contract. If he’s happy in STL, he will sign a deal that makes both sides happy, IMO.

I would not go longer 4 years 6.5M. For Perron maybe 2 years at 3.5...i could see Perron taking a hometown discount. Someone said trade ROR for Thackuck. If MT doesnt resign why not just sign him.

Id imagine both of those values are pretty low. They seem extremely team friendly. I don’t see any way Perron doesn’t get a raise with how good he’s been for us at 4m AAV. I also don’t really see ROR signing for less than 7.5. Personally I wouldn’t go over 8 for ROR given where we are currently at. But he’s probably earned somewhere in the 8 range.

Perron is going to be a tricky one due to the fact he seems to continually get better as he gets older somehow. He’s a very valuable piece for us as is ROR. It’s going to be tough when we get to the point of needing to re-sign them both and extend our younger guys. Would venture to guess a vet or two is shipped out unless both take heavy discounts which neither really owes it to us

If the rumors of the cap going up significantly in a couple years are true, I'd be comfortable with anything that isn't a raise and not max term, provided he can look back in form by the end of the season.

Last two captains has left, 'cus they didn't get what they wanted. Why its not different with ROR? Only if ROR agree discount he will stay or we will see another captain walk for nothing.

From what I recall, it's going to take 3 years before we start to see the cap raise significantly. With covid and the lower attendances, players are in debt at the moment and the salary cap can only increase by $1 million each year till they've paid this off. Once that happens, we should see some crazy increases in salary for players league wide. Personally, I would rather take a short term deal on both Perron and ROR just based on the fact that they will be entering the later stages of their career. I think Perron will likely get a deal similar to salary as Nugent-Hopkins with less term and ROR probably gets something like Couture or Aho in salary but obviously less term. I can see Armstrong biting the bullet unless ROR falls off a cliff and giving him a good contract, but for the most part, he doesn't put a lot of term on contracts. More recently he has given out 7 year deals for seemingly no reason, but prior he was offering 4-5 year deals for those players in their mid 30's. I guess we'll see after this year how he's going to handle both of these guys, but I expect there to be a lot of congruence on all of their parts.

For me the only way i do ROR any more $$ than he is getting now is if say it was something front loaded. Like 8M year 1 and 2 and 6.5 year 3 and 4. Or that kind of structure.

Army has been very clear to anyone who asks that no one player is going to break the bank and wreck our cap. ROR will be no different. Backes was willing to leave for more financial security and Pietrangelo was after a new challenge and more money. If ROR is looking to maximize his last big contract it will likely be somewhere else. If he values his role and legacy here more than squeezing every dollar he can out of his career (not that there is anything wrong with that) then I'm sure we will find some middle ground and find a way for him to stay.

They made both of them offers, they both just got better offers. I’d say the score is 1-1 on how those were played so far.
