They could make it next year but I wouldn't bet on it so went with the year after. Need to replace the coach and get better goaltending if they are going to make it next year.

They're really close... at this point I think all it takes is a more consistent season from start to finish. The aging teams are starting to show signs of slowing down which also helps.

I mean, I feel like it's easy for them to get just that little bit extra to push them over the hump.

Healthy Josh Norris
Chychrun for a full season
Add a quality bottom 6er
Another year of experience for the kids
Avoid major injuries

I feel like as long as the skaters are good enough, you can get in with just okay goaltending. Most of the time teams are able to find that. Just don't go in with a 40 year old vet and a AHL guy.

They're going to be right up against the cap, but keeping the team intact seems doable to me if it's at 83.5M

well they are waltzing there and the world record for the largest waltz is 1598 pairs

so sometime in the next 20 seasons

might aswell dream big and hope for a McDavid trade or something if you're hoping for impossible things

dude already managed to get injured again even just since joining Ottawa less than a month ago

3-0 to the flyers... yikes. No high end line driving forwards in the system other than Larkin. I'd be upset too.

pretending I give a shit about the Ottawa Senators of all things(why would I when there's actually good young teams like New Jersey to be jealous of? it doesn't even make sense) doesn't magically make "Chychrun for a full season" a remotely realistic thing

Your opinion is worthless. Predictable negative trash take. They're 5 points out right now. A season where they haven't had their number 1 center for the entire thing. Both goalies have been hurt at the same time or one of them at the minimum the entire season. They have had one of their top 3 d men out all season and only got chychrun at the TDL. The entire core group outside of Giroux is 25 and under. Best two players are on their ELC's. They have one of the worst structural coach's in the league who is going to be replaced. In the last week they have outshot Boston, Toronto, Colorado and Tampa. Try harder or be better.
Jesus Bert. Calm yourself.

So, why are you in a thread titled "What is the earliest you see the Sens making the playoffs?" when you claim you don't give a shit about the Ottawa Senators?

Methinks you're still bitter about the Sens beating the Wings so hard they restarted their rebuild.

the funny thing is this is basically the exact opposite of how I feel, i've been very vocally and consistently against the free agent signings and such Yzerman did last summer

but whatever if you Ottawa fans are so insecure that you need to imagine some sort of agenda on my part just because i'm a Wings fan then have at it I guess

I think they need solid goaltending, and I think they're a contender if I'm being honest.

Juuse Saros is the only star goalie available. That or John Gibson.

Why are you still in this thread if you don't care about the Sens?

....because people keep responding to me?

why a half dozen Sens fans felt the need to quote me and trash talk the Wings over a single comment that it's unrealistic to expect a player that is constantly injured and literally just got injured again recently to play a full season next year is probably a more interesting question to examine

If they don't make it next season, something is really wrong. That's a playoff calibre roster.

You obviously gave a shit to click on the subject and give your negative opinion. That takes a lot.

Most people definitely don't click on a post of a team they don't give a shit about and start saying negative things.

It looks like you actively care and actively hate the team. Looks like you care a decent bit. No one else does what you do if they don't care to.

I have 13 thousand posts on this forum, i've posted in thousands of threads

do I have a deep hatred for every single team or something? because i've probably posted many negative comments about all of them over the years(and that very much includes the Wings)

do you "care a decent bit" about every single one of the threads you've posted in in the 15 thousand you've made? I very much doubt that

This is going to be a very good team. I think they could do it next year - they've started to figure it out.

The only real question is that they've graduated a lot of their guys so it's a question of where they're going to get their depth from without nuking the cap. And of course, the new ownership is a mystery which could once again f*** everything up.

I mean... it was the summer of Dorion....
So? The Summer of Dorion was just as much about improving the team in the medium/long term as it was in the short term. Most Sens fans said that the Sens were still only a bubble team at best, and that was before the Sens lost Norris (35 goals last yr) and Formenton (18 goals last yr) for the season.

Go back and read the thread: Will Ottawa make the playoffs?

Sens fans were actually the ones trying to temper non-Sens fans expectations.

I think they need solid goaltending, and I think they're a contender if I'm being honest.

Juuse Saros is the only star goalie available. That or John Gibson.

Hart is reportedly available too, though the gap between what the Flyers want and what teams will offer may be insurmountable. Vejmelka might be, Demko might be. At this point any of them should be a higher-probability play than Gibson.

But also, the way goalie voodoo works, they might find the right-fit goalie who excels in their system as a UFA or as a low-cost trade. A goalie being a ‘star’ with their current team is no reliable predictor that he won’t do poorly in Ottawa just as a goalie mediocre on their current team won’t break through on Ottawa. We see examples of that every single year. Including one goalie the Sens shipped out last summer in Gustavsson.

Sens are where the Devils were last year. An upgrade from abhorrent to competent goalie play is all they need to be a wild card level team - they don’t need to find their Ullmark (but if they do they’d be a real contender).
