What is a random trade that you still think about?

Every once in a while I remember being a little kid and finding out the Red Wings (well, Scotty Bowman) was over-hauling the team. I think the first trade where I really understood what happened was Keith Primeau for Brendan Shanahan. And I was pissed, because I loved Primeau. I remember trades before that one (Coffey, Sheppard come to mind), but I CLEARLY remember that one, and what it felt like to be devastated by my team.

And that trade comes to mind now whenever I think about trades that hit people in the feels.
Exactly the trade I was crazy about. At that time, I thought we stopped trying winning the cup. Funny how things turned out.

1981 Sabres trade Gare, Schoenfeld, and Derek Smith to Detroit for Foligno, McCourt, and Peterson....I was 10 years old and remember asking my Dad about the trade and what he thought as I was bummed/shocked we got rid of Gare but my Dad said it looks like we got some good young players...Turned out pretty good for Buffalo...Foligno was a great power forward who became Sabres Captain....Years later after he had retired Folgino came into the gas station I was working in....That was pretty cool as he was one of my all-time favorite Sabres.

1994 - The Oilers trade Dave Manson, who Sather had recently said wasn't living up to his million dollar contract for: Rookie Boris Mironov, who made the all-rookie team, Mats Lindgren, who at the time was a highly regarded prospect along with a first round pick that ended up 4th overall. My young self thought this trade would be a massive fleecing by the Oilers. Unfortunately Mats Lindgren didn't become the player he was expected to be and the 4th overall pick was used to select Jason Bonsignore.

The Panthers trading Stu Barnes AND Jason Woolley for Chris Wells. Panthers management felt that Wells was the answer for Lindros and saw Barnes and Woolley as expendable pieces as they were smaller. The trade was a failure, they made other trades to compensate if iirc, spiraling the team.

For whatever reason, it took way too long to recover from that trade and find direction.

I’ll never forget a female coworker and way bigger Panther (and hockey fan) than I at the time telling me that Wells didn’t have “it” after watching him in practice after the trade happened. “He’s not a good skater, Stuey glides over the ice, effortless. You can hear Wells. Very slushy sounding.”

I remember the same one but from the perspective of being a hartford fan

I was pissed too haha

I think coffey was the same deal

I bumped into Foligno on my way to work at the Galleria - I was on my way to one of my early '90's record store jobs - and he was with Nick. I called him Mr. Foligno and wished him well in Toronto (he'd been traded for Curran and Franceschetti earlier). He turned to Nick and told him "say hello to the nice man Nick" and Nick (who was maybe four at the time) just gives me a sullen "hello sir".

Patrick Roy for Stéphane Fiset and Owen Nolan. Didn't happen, but was apparently agreed upon in principle when the Habs GM got canned.

Serge Savard was ready to make the deal , but Pierre Lacroix asked for more time to think about it .
When Lacroix called back he told Savard that he had a deal and was ready to make the Trade , but Savard replied : " You're gonna have to make the trade with the new GM because i just lost my job ".

During the 1998 ice storm in Quebec, we were more than 2 weeks without electricity, so unable to watch hockey. But I remember 2 hockey events happened during that time frame :

1- Brian Savage had the game of his life, scoring 4 goals and adding 2 assists in an 8-2 win against the Islanders.

2- And a few days later, Réjean Houle continued to dismantle the Habs by trading away Stéphane Richer, Darcy Tucker and David Wilkie to the Lightning, in return for Patrick Poulin, Igor Ulanov and Mick Vukota.
Honestly, my big takeaway here was that Mick Vukota was still playing in 1998.

Oilers got Brian Leetch and Mike Richter in 2003.

It was a strange rule where teams that could not sign a certain number of their UFAs got compensation picks.
Oilers and Rangers helped each other out for free picks.
