What happens if the Toronto Maple Leafs don't go deep in the playoffs?

Assuming they get knocked out in the first or second, it will be the same thing with trade everybody until the next season when Toronto goes 4-0 to start the season and there's 8 threads about this is the year lol

I do honestly hope they go deep this year, I could careless for the players ( mostly Matthews ), but their fans deserve it

Nothing. Toronto is happy with what they have.

Somewhat competitive and entertaining big market team that keeps generating revenue for years to come with this situation. Winning playoff rounds is only extra success for them

This isn't even the year for Toronto to go deep. Next year with Tavares no longer making 11M seems like a much better opportunity to improve the roster.

This year is basically an audition year for Marner to see if he can be worth what he wants to get paid. If Rantanen doesn't re-sign in Carolina, the Leafs can swap Marner for him in FA.

Yes I'm sure a player like Rantanen would be so eager to join the Maple Leafs.

If not, 14M in cap space to improve the roster is a great consolation prize.

If Rantanen doesn't believe he's good enough to help Toronto then he can find someone else. Not too many contenders with the cap space to sign him though - so he'd have to take some discounts... which he supposedly wouldn't take in Colorado so that seems even more unlikely.
 
There's a thread like this every year. Followed by a collective Leafs fanbase spring meltdown for the playoffs, another meltdown in the summer for the offseason moves, and then their hope is reawakened with the regular season until the next playoffs meltdown.

No there really isn't, these are the last years of an in prime core and the east/west look wide open, so it makes sense for them to go all in.
 
Probably overpay Marner to stay and try again while changing up the smaller pieces.

Same shit as the past 6 years ?

The goalies are probably the best they ever had during this run, specifically Stolarz.
 
Same thing as last year, nothing. probably overpay Marner with a 12-14 mil contract.

The leafs aren't a playoff team, they aren't a team, they have good players individually, but will never get a past the playoff hump with this group.

Marner was ok in OT when there was no hitting in the 4nations and Matthews did nothing against same level peers. Compared to sid/mcdavid/mckinnion who all stepped up.

Once real hockey starts in the playoffs, leafs are toast

Remember last year when everyone swore it would change...and then nothing did.

To be a contender one has to contend. The Leafs get embarassed every year and never even came anywhere close to be in the final 4.

We call what they are PRETENDERS.
 
They'll sign some UFA on July 1st and then the media will say how they're a favorite for the 2026 Stanley Cup. You know, the usual.

Not sure I agree with that. Yes it took Ovi many years, but the core that finally broke through didn’t coalesce until 2015/16 (the major additions being Kuzy at 1C/2C, Carlson 1D, and the arrival of Oshie and Wilson)
