What happens if a team doesn't make a pick by the time the clock ends?

Bettman takes a big hammer and smashes their draft table
This was befoere the new rules from 1st of June this year. Now Bettman in his bubblehead suit drive a golf cart in full speed in the draft table this was also cleared by the NHLPA only demand was it should be 4 wheel drived.

What should happen is the next team can go as soon as the clock expires and every team after that when that team picks. The team being passed can get their pick in at any time.

what would happen is the whole draft would shut down because no one working in the NHL has half a brain and anything that happens has neither been prepared for or given consideration.

...a giant mechanical arm controlled by Gary Bettman's brain grabs that team's head of amateur scouting and launches him into a vat of hydrofluoric acid, nullifying the pick and forcing said team to find another, quicker scout for future picks

If it's one of Bettman's buddies, aka Vegas, Chicago, Arizona, Pittsburgh, Tampa, NYR, or Washington: nothing. Bettman would probably let Vegas pick twice for giggles.

It's happened. Not sure if it was nhl or not but a trade that involved the pick didn't get approved and the team thought it did. Next team teams picked super quick before the team that was supposed to pick made their pick 3 picks later (and got the guy wanted anyways).

Yeah I hear they're going to just give Vegas San Jose's pick on draft day. Gonna be nice to get Smith or Michkov in the pipeline. Looking forward to it.

This is actually a great question! I had never thought of it. The clock always seemed like a mindless formality to me.

Gary presses a big red button and one random member of that team's draft table gets sent down to a pit of hell-fire Auston Powers style. Then they get one added minute to their draft clock. Rinse and repeat

NFL. Vikings didn't get pick in time. Luckily for them, they still got the guy they wanted at 9. The guy they got is a HOFer or near HOFer. I know he was a semifinalist one year.

Sometimes you will see the team picking first, jersey in hand, before Bettman even comes out on stage. I think it's to avoid taking trade calls etc and getting distracted.
