What happened to the offense?

Road power play especially needs to get going and the team is tired that’s clear and they don’t shoot from the slot these days. but that I see and it’s super clear vs Boston and Pasternak - Boston players all try and feed Pasta and it’s all the time on every shift - Ottawa skates into the zone and it’s kinda they’ll make it up when they get there, they dont have a focus to funnel pucks with urgency to Takchuk or Stu it’s kinda of a mentality they are all created equally and they all can score. Need more offensive focus on getting the puck to scorers and not whoever feels good and just be free in the O zone.

Focused primarily on defensive play.

Lack of offense being generated from the backend. Looks like lack of personnel in house not likely to be fixed without personnel change or Yakemchuk developing quickly.

Forward group being underwhelming as a whole and while defensively competent, not enough offensive weapons. Looks like lack of personnel in house same as above, but without any promising prospects anywhere close to contributing.

Top offensive weapon in Stutzle is playing with an aging, slow Giroux and an underwhelming Gaudette, making the "top line" more of a 2nd or 3rd line.

This team is where they are in the standings imo and ultimately the personnel will need to change a bit to improve. Ullmark staying healthy would probably mask that a bit and they're probably in a division spot if he hadn't gone down.

Ultimately, I think its accepted that it's a work in progress and that where they are in the standings is a reflection of the roster. Bubble team.

We really need a true offensive threat from the back end.

We lost offensive personnel.

Lost debrincat without effectively replacing his offense.

Lost chychrun without effectively replacing his offense.

Giroux is losing a step...haven't replace his offense.

Lost formenton...haven't replace his offense.

These things add up and take a toll over time.

Everyone was raving about how we got better defensively for this year, and I agreed, but I raised concern about how our offense might be worse and be a problem...people brushed me off.

Well, our offense is a problem. I was right.

You can't just keep replacing offensive players with defensive players and expect the offense to keep up.

We were supposed to replace our offensive guys with guys equally as offensive, but better defensively to get IMPROVEMENTs...trading offense for defense is just a wash. We need to improve.
We lost Karlsson/.

Never been the same since.

Or how about Staios is a rookie GM who has no ability to build a team.

This team has depth issues.. they need all their horses to compete and they need them all playing on their toes.

The Powerplay is too predictable and too stagnant. Entries are predictable, they come up the left side... they pass it to the left wing.. then try to pass it back to the LD

A lot starts in our end... We need to break the puck out cleanly.

We can't play dump and chase when we don't chase. The dumps need to be better and the forwards can't slack off.. We are at our best when we can possess the puck in the Ozone.. Some combos have worked well here while others have not. Also we need to be able to attack the blueline with speed.. The puck has to go in the zone so the forwards can maintain speed vs waiting at the blueline.

The team lacks skill. That much is obvious. Having Our best forward and #1 C playing with Adam Gaudette and a 36 year old Giroux is disgraceful. But this is what happens when you throw away 1st round picks like candy and then just draft the biggest/most physical guy you can find 90% with your remaining draft picks.

That being said we have been on the road a ton over the last couple months. Fatigue and matchups play a big role in this drought, IMO. I expect the team to start rebounding offensively in the coming weeks as they get to rest, practice and play at home more.

The fact remains though that we don't have the offensive horses we need. This is now a young man's game and we have exactly 1 goal scored by players drafted in the last 4 drafts. That has got to be the worst total in the league. And considering we were a lottery team for that whole time, that is appalling.

They definitely lack skill up front and Stutzle's line mates are a prime example of that. Not really up for debate imo.

f*** it, call up Tyler Boucher (unless he's injured again). Can't possibly score any less than what we're already getting.

The past is behind us. There are other ways of getting depth....This season alone i saw Tomasino and Fabbro go for (almost) free.

We spent a lot of money this summer too. Some good some bad moves. Lets see how things go but there have been chances to get 'free wallets'

Offense from back-end isn't the problem.

1. Style of play Green has us playing. Because Green has us playing a strong defensive game reliant on possession and stick work, we would need excellent puck possession and strong bodied players to be effective in this system. Who can think of the players on our roster/particularly top 6 who fit this category?

Pinto and perhaps Giroux. And they've been most productive.

Stutzle, Batherson, Norris arent that(Stutzle next best and he's been struggling with physical game while being strong defensively). Tkachuk has been terrible puck possession or he would be absolutely lights out in this system.

The guys we have are

1) New to this system and are learning how to thrive and adjust in it
2) Are not built for it

It's why we see guys like Cousins, Amadio and Greig look just as effective and are being constantly thrusted into top 6 positions.

2. Chemistry

Stutzle needs a quick and strong player to keep up with him and make space. Giroux and Gaudette aren't that. Tkachuk has been playing very poorly offensively and Batherson has shown signs but they need a counterpart.

Norris has struggled a lot and is still trying to find his footing. Also has struggled in puck possession and physical game + Tkachuk is only real top 6 LW we have and since he is off, no one else has been clicking with Norris. Giroux-Norris is too weak and needs a strong bodied RW but we don't have that.

Seems about right.

I think they thought it was a sure thing and just sat back and pet their back

Everyone is playing solid D because they're not cheating for offense. Time to go sign a cherry picker like Sprong. Everyone else keep playing D, Sprong can score a few

Pinto, Brady and Bath worked well when Martin had them together. I would try that again. Then run Norris on a wing with Stu and G. Stick Greig at center on the 3rd line with Amadio and Perron. That would leave Cousins, Gaudette and Ostapchuk for the fouth line. Maybe have Gaudette at Center, he played well there at the start, and have Ostapchuk on the right side. Or flip Pinto and Stu as the top two centers. Stu and Pinto seem to be the ones who can get the play moving in the right direction on a regular basis. That might be where to start. Pinto can win draws. If Norris is with Stu he can help with draws, which might free up G a bit and get him some stamina.

Perron looks like he will fit great in this system. When healthy is like to see

Perron Stu Batherson - Bath and supports Stu on the rush and Perron in the Ozone

Tkachuk Norris Giroux - Grind line with Norris being the D presence with 2 wingers who are less than stellar defensively

Greig Pinto Amadio - Smart gritty

Gregor Ostapchuk Cousins - Speed, size and an asshat. Great 4th line mix
