I wouldn’t say he was ever a defensive stalwart. He’s always had more of a puck carrier type slant to his game, but he was just big so he was kind of was assumed to be good defensively. I think in the right environment like in Colorado, or Jersey when they made a big jump in 22-23, he was a decent option as a big guy who can move the puck ok, but get into trouble sometimes, like a Tyler Myers. But like Myers he can make things worse when the fit isn’t right. It’s a bit weird his production has completely dried up, but Sullivan seems to have sucked the offense out of Karlsson too so maybe that’s part of it.

Some Devils fans were pissed when he didn’t resign and we rolled out Luke / Nemec last year.

Moving on from Severson / Graves was smart.
Yep exactly Graves was alright for the Devils in 22-23 but re-signing him to the contract that Pitts gave him would of been disastrous, even if he didn't play as bad as he is now. Severson heavily regressed after going to the Jackets. That would have been another disastrous contract for the Devils.

Good luck, I'm still waiting to find out what happened to Will Butcher
Same here! Looked like there was good potential after his rookie season, then he fell off the face of the earth in like 20 games.

By sheer coincidence, Graves recorded an assist tonight for his 1st point of the season.

Not according to the NHL boxscore... Did they take it away from him?

As to the question, he was never great to start with. Formed an ok partnership with Marino on the 22-23 Devils which probably inflated his value.
