What happened to LGK?

Spent a long time as a lurker there but RARELY posted, was a pretty vicious place to try to post as a newbie...someone went off on my (harmless) first post and consequently got several of us warned or whatever so I just laid low lol

But as a Kings fandom repository and 'official' nerd board for a while I would always want it to persist

I didn’t get banned. I just stopped posting, and even lurking. I was mostly active in the mid-to-late 2000s during infancy the post-lockout era. There was this section of the forum called “Men’s Room.” Lmao.

Honestly? I remember LGK fondly. I started posting there around 2000 when I was a young, confident, dumb 13 year old. My OG handle was Better Dead Than Red (I had no idea that it was an old anti-communism slogan, I just hated the Wings), but after not posting during the 05 lockout my account got frozen/deleted and when I came back I shortened it to BDTR. I loved going to the in-between-periods meetups outside of Team LA, and looking back, it’s endearing and mystifying that people would even give me the time of day being such a young goofball. I even played in a few of the LGK pickup games (at Glacial Gardens I believe).

I know it’s been dying a slow death for a while, but it seems like only in the past 2-3 years that it has almost evaporated completely. I’ll still lurk for a few minutes once every month or two for old times sake. I also haven’t posted there in at least double that amount of time. But I’m mostly a lurker here too honestly. I was posting like crazy back in the LGK heyday, probably all asinine eye-garbage!

Going back to about 2012-2014 I started splitting my posts and doom-scrolling between LGK and HF (I had a different HF handle then, changed it to my current one for kicks). To me, it seemed sometime in the late Lombardi/early Blake years that the energy really tipped towards HF and I started noticing the LGK regulars jumping ship too.

HF is better than LGK ever was about talking pure hockey, especially the technical side of things (cap management, long term team building, drafting/development, etc), but LGK seemed like a more alive community. Not saying it was a healthy community, but between the meetups and more active non-hockey threads on Reality Hipcheck gave it more of a culture than HF.

Pluses and minuses either way. As I’ve gotten older and less interested in reading/posting my own thoughts I think the gestalt of HF fits me better, but there’s always going to be a little smile/smirk on my face when reminiscing about LGK.

I had a great time at LGK back in the day. I think it eventually got a bit too slow and I stopped visiting. Not many forums survive these days, HF is a rare exception.

Mods are why I quit this board too. I have only recently been lurking the forums again. I do miss the LGK pick up games...
ahhh, me too. was always great to prove that 'Tikkanen' was nowhere as good as he thought he was - RIP.

Was? :skeptic: (Not talking about the Kings section, but I can't imagine it ever having been worse than right now, outside this section.)
The Kings section was fine. RJ was definitely the best Kings mod by far.

But yes HF used to be much worse. Mods power trip like crazy. I think the best evidence of it is that it’s against the rules to talk about why you get infractions which is insane to me. They act like HF is a lot more important that it is. The global moderators are the worst though. During the Oilers series I would like their posts when the Kings would win a game. Not against the rules to do that but I still got an infraction. It’d be nice to have a website where it’d understood it’s a sports forum. That’s why Ron started his forums, and it was a nice website, just no users.

My Dad and I haven't ever been the type to break the bank on Kings tickets, but thanks to a few incredibly generous members of LGK we both got to sit near the glass a few times when folks posted that they had extra tickets for free. I never posted much there, but I always appreciated that community aspect.

The Oilers mods and main thread mods were insane during our series this year. I couldn't even post generally discussing how the Kings had beaten them without having my post removed. It was asinine.

Anyone here remember the April Fools joke in either 2001 or 2002 where Ziggy was supposedly detained in Canada during a road trip due to some immigration issue and he’d miss the playoffs? Good times.

Wasn't LGK around in the late 90s or maybe an earlier version? I posted there but was more active during that time on the other site...was it Gann's? Online Kingdom or something? Hell, the Sharks official message board back then was a great spot to talk NHL.

Anyways, LGK probably stopped for me during the lockout or a little before. Just so easy to get more varied hockey discussion here with all the team boards and the main board. I think the big thing was the '03 Draft and then all prospect tracking afterwards. Seems like following prospects became more of a thing at that point and then really took off with the Lombardi rebuild.

It was on Rivals for a while and there were other teams there too. Then Rivals went belly up in the middle of the night.

At some point in the late 2000s, my work started blocking LGK so it fell out of my rotation. I did have one funny memory with LGK. I had a group of ~20 people for the first preseason game after the lockout. I logged into LGK a few days later and saw a thread "looking for the guy in Section X Row Y Seat Z." I pulled the ticket stub out of my wallet and sure enough that was mine, but none of us sat in our assigned seat.

The gal that started the thread was trying to find a guy for her other friend. I made the mistake of posting the ticket stub along with the group photo we had taken. Naturally the rest of LGK started ruling out who they were trying to find (ie, I had been eliminated fairly early).

We ended up having an awkward meet up at Frozen Fury a few weeks later.

I owe so much to LGK. All of my closest friends came from there, been to three weddings, multiple children born. The jazz nights, the Frozen Furies, hundreds of late nights and parties, just incredible memories.

I stopped posting there years ago, but I have nothing but the most positive things to say about that site.

I haven’t been to LGK in at least 15 years if not longer.

It was mostly a worse version of our own forum here. But I do remember a guy named doughtyonetimer who had legitimate connections somewhere in the org. He called the Carter/Johnson trade well before it happened, the Sekera trade, and more.

Also reported Lombardi almost did some mega deal in 2012 centered around Brown for Rick Nash.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the customary Frozen Fury Hofbrauhaus.

I actually took photos at quite a few LGK pickup games out on the ice (between shifts) – yikes I've probably snapped quite a few of all of you. Probably should have burned those images.
I think I have a few of those photos saved somewhere.

LGK was my first Kings forum too. I didn’t post there much, but I was much younger then and wasted lots of time arguing on my local teams forums.

I always felt more comfortable here for whatever reason, but generally found LGK positive. I think my account is still active, as I logged in briefly during lockdown out of abject boredom.
