Honestly? I remember LGK fondly. I started posting there around 2000 when I was a young, confident, dumb 13 year old. My OG handle was Better Dead Than Red (I had no idea that it was an old anti-communism slogan, I just hated the Wings), but after not posting during the 05 lockout my account got frozen/deleted and when I came back I shortened it to BDTR. I loved going to the in-between-periods meetups outside of Team LA, and looking back, it’s endearing and mystifying that people would even give me the time of day being such a young goofball. I even played in a few of the LGK pickup games (at Glacial Gardens I believe).
I know it’s been dying a slow death for a while, but it seems like only in the past 2-3 years that it has almost evaporated completely. I’ll still lurk for a few minutes once every month or two for old times sake. I also haven’t posted there in at least double that amount of time. But I’m mostly a lurker here too honestly. I was posting like crazy back in the LGK heyday, probably all asinine eye-garbage!
Going back to about 2012-2014 I started splitting my posts and doom-scrolling between LGK and HF (I had a different HF handle then, changed it to my current one for kicks). To me, it seemed sometime in the late Lombardi/early Blake years that the energy really tipped towards HF and I started noticing the LGK regulars jumping ship too.
HF is better than LGK ever was about talking pure hockey, especially the technical side of things (cap management, long term team building, drafting/development, etc), but LGK seemed like a more alive community. Not saying it was a healthy community, but between the meetups and more active non-hockey threads on Reality Hipcheck gave it more of a culture than HF.
Pluses and minuses either way. As I’ve gotten older and less interested in reading/posting my own thoughts I think the gestalt of HF fits me better, but there’s always going to be a little smile/smirk on my face when reminiscing about LGK.
