That was total viewers in Finland. Canada AVERAGED 16.5 million viewers for the entire 2010 gold medal game. I can't find the total viewer numbers but I expect it is significantly higher. Add the to the 27 million AVERAGE viewers in the US. At least these 43.5 Million people got to see hockey that is better quality than the average NHL game.
Maybe the poor (relative to the NHL) quality of European hockey leagues makes fans more excited about non-best on best International hockey.
What I can tell you is you won't see 43.5 Million AVERAGE viewers in North America (the majority of the world hockey market) for this years Olympic gold medal game. Maybe 10-15% of that. So when I say people don't care, its a relative thing.
Then you could say that the average North American people don't care, which is accurate. Because people includes more than just them, even though many do not think so.
I don't think they want to be watching secondary stars, but they enjoy the best level hockey they are offered and in an international tournament. If it was best on best the commitment would be even bigger.
