What does Marchand need to be 1st ballot HHOFer?

I know they have individual awards. If that were enough, both Sedins would be above Yzerman or Dionne.
Uuhh... Yzerman has a Smyth Selke and Lindsey (or whatever it was called before).

Shouldn't you know that as a Wings fan?

Dionne has thr Art Ross over Gretzky. And those 2 Lindsays (or whatever it was called before).

I like Marchand (I mean, I love to hate him). He’s a player every team would love to have and he was a stud for several years. But the problem is he didn’t get going for awhile, his first really good year was what, when he was 28 in 2016? And considering he started slowing down a couple years ago, that’s a very short, not allllll that high peak.

Hold on there, he paid an image consultant to make some funny tweets, so all is forgiven. We're supposed to think he's a great leader at this point. Get with the paid narrative!
Debating his on ice impact and leadership is a desperate stretch to pile on the blind hatred. This is not Tom Wilson we are talking about.

Never a top 5 player in the league. No individual awards. I don’t think he’s a hall of famer but oh well
16/17 - 20/21 he was 3rd in PPG behind McDavid and Kucherov and ahead of Draisatil, Mackinnon, Crosby and Malkin and leader of +/- in that time period. Hard to argue he was not top5 player back then. Most underrated player in the league IMO.

Needs to be well over 1000 points, but even that won't get him 1st ballot. I think he falls into the JR catagory, and eventually gets in at some time.

Yes, I know that. Point is there’s peers with more trophies. I don’t just rank players based on trophies. I have Marchand ahead of the Sedins, Perry, and Benn, all of whom won more trophies.

The 1000 point barrier gets him in the conversation for the hall. I don't love that fact, but it's pretty much the way it is now.

But I don't see much else that indicates a hall of famer. Nothing pushes him over the top.

If the HOF was limited to Top 5 players in the league, you'd have to kick out at least half of the current inductees.
He's never even been top 10

I know they have individual awards. If that were enough, both Sedins would be above Yzerman or Dionne.

I think Marchand is a better overall player than either Sedin. Better playoff performer, more difficult to play against, and a better two-way threat.
One of the Sedin's won a Pearson, but Marchand is somehow more difficult to play against and a better two way threat? Sounds like the players they played against felt otherwise

Actually, sportsmanship and character are specifically listed as hall of fame criteria:

"Playing ability, sportsmanship, character and contributions to his or her team or teams and to the game of hockey in general."

Marchand's piss poor sportsmanship and low character are directly relevant to this thread.

Can't believe 950 points, 1 cup, one 100 point season, and no individual awards of any kind gets you into the hall these days ...

Marchand to me is in the hall of very very good right alongside Toews and Backstrom

Toews captained 3 teams to a cup and was a stellar two way player in his prime.

You maintain either Sedin was a stronger two way threat than Marchand? That would be easy to debate... Marchand was top 5 with ease in his prime stretch, albeit not very many seasons.

A Sedin does not score the SHG in the 2011 Cup Final that Marchand did. That was a rookie Marchand. His compete level is remarkable, which is how he ends up with a HoF career despite being 5'8.

For all his on the ice antics, I've read the guy is a really good dude off the ice.

I do not think 1st ballot but he'll probably get in eventually. Deservedly so.

Gotta judge players by their eras and I find so many around here using goals and points benchmarks that were absolutely skewed by the 80s era.

Just looking at the last 15 years (including this year), here are the top of the leaderboards for goals and points:

Goals:
1. Ovi
2. Stamkos
3. Tavares
4. Crosby
5. Marchand
6. Kane
7. Pavelski
8. Matthews
9. Benn
10. Malkin

Points:
1. Crosby
2. Kane
3. Ovi
4. Stamkos
5. Giroux
6. Tavares
7. McDavid
8. Kopitar
9. Marchand
10. Malkin

5th for goals and 9th for points over almost a decade and a half while being a fantastic 2 way player is pretty nuts. I guess we could have a debate on first ballot or not but how about other things:

World Junior Goldx2
WHC Gold
World Cup Gold (Including the clutch championship winner)
Stanley cup winner
2x 1st team all-star
2x 2nd team all-star

Bruins team records:
Most playoff goals in Bruins history
Most shorthanded goals in Bruins history
Most overtime goals in Bruins history

Feels like he is one of the more underrated players out there to me. It would have to be a helluva cohort going in to knock him off getting in first try. Maybe his peak can be used against him as he was around the 5th to 10th best player in the league for a 5 year stretch but thats still stupid impressive. He even managed to win a cup when thats becoming less credible with the cap and 32 teams. Absolutely 1st ballot HOFer IMO.
