As much as I like your number more given my age, it is unfortunately not correct.

The quote from Gretzky comes on April 1, 2015 when McDavid was projected to go to the Oilers at #1, so it was correct at the time.

However, the full quote is: “He's as good as I've seen in the last 30 years, the best player to come into the League in the last 30 years, the best to come along since [Mario] Lemieux and [Sidney] Crosby," Gretzky said. "He can definitely change a franchise's fortunes.”

Nobody wants to see Wayne Gretzky's records broken more than Wayne Gretzky. He is on the Ovi train for sure.

Gretzky was soo insanely competitive his whole life. He likes to give out positive messages, say good things about people and he's a fan of the sport. That said, deep down I don't believe he truly wants Ovechkin to beat his record, he'll just be humble about it if it happens.

No he wouldn't. To "destroy" Gretzky's point totals means scoring 300 points in a season. McDavid isn't doing that with a wooden stick and inferior skates, while partying on the road after every game.

They get along quite well. Interviews together, commercials together, etc. Wayne has presented him with NHL awards and always looked thrilled doing so. They’ve definitely been seen in Edmonton dining together at the Marriott. Just two guys with immense respect for eachother that know how special it is to don the Oilers jersey.

He’d be wearing old equipment, shooting with a wood stick, skating with vastly inferior skates, probably have different eating and definitely training habits.

Clearly McDavid playing in the 80s would still be one of the best, nobody is going to debate that. What I’m saying is McDavid would be a different player even if only slightly.

We wouldn’t being seeing a 2023 McDavid at the rink in 1983. You’d see the 1983 version of McDavid.
