TSN: What do you think about the whole canadian division?

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if someone like Matthews declares his primary residence as his place in Arizona, and due to all the travel throughout the season, they are in the States enough they can viably make that claim. A full Canadian season would make that very difficult to get by the CRA. Pretty sure Phil's primary residence when he was here was in Florida.
Just a thought.....Matthews was paid bonus money in July and may not be subject to the same tax situation.

Then it will just carry over to his 2021 taxes. Players playing in Canada who usually reside in the states for Tax purposes will feel the hit at some point.

One upside is we don't have to watch Toronto Florida games and pretend like we're watching a division rivalry game.

Fair enough. For my part, I don't mind the idea of not directly competing with Boston and Tampa for a season at all. The division would go from eight to seven teams as well. I'm also interested in seeing how the other divisions look.

I get the point, but in the case of Matthews, he doesn’t make much money during the season

He’s taxed on all income. So, if he’s unable to declare his residency for Arizona for a calendar year due to the excess time spent in Canada he’ll be hit with it either for 2020 or 2021, potentially both. In the CRA’s eyes it doesn’t matter how his income is structured.

I’d love it. Would be great for rivalries, and a cool/fresh change.

Would be a very competitive division - only one legit bad team (Ottawa), everyone else could be in the playoff race. We’d lose some punching bags (Detroit, and arguably Buffalo, though they may be turning it around), but we’d ALSO lose Boston and Tampa, which would be great. We’d go from the #3 team in the division to IMO #1.

I wouldn’t count Ottawa out...they’re gonna be sneaky good next year I think and a problem the year after that...they made some GOOD moves this off seadon

I think it will be a lot of fun from a fan perspective. Although I'm not going to love the main board of HF. The already insufferable rivalries are going to be taken up a notch.

As someone that lives out West, this would allow me to have and see more Leaf games played out west than what usually happens.

However the pandemic and no fans in buildings would also decrease opportunities to see them in person so that would also be the downfall as I have in the past (better years) caught all 3 Leaf western games in person in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver when the Leafs came out west for their 1 and only road trip annually.

Would say the Leafs would be seeing a lot of motivated opponents. If Toronto or Montreal aren't going to make the playoffs, they'll still play a bigger game against one another. Often, it's something of a small victory to do so more then a win against another team.

As long as only 1 or 2 teams make the playoffs, it’s fine.
Well that won't happen. If the vast majority (if not all) of all games played are in the Canadian division there will obviously be more than 1 or 2.

My guess is it there are four divisions, then you'll see the top four teams from each move on, then do two rounds between those four, and then the best team from each division plays in the semi-finals.

The travel would suck (assuming they don't do the mini bubble thing), but it would be funny to have so many extra home games (Ottawa). I mean, doesn't everyone love having a main home and a cottage?
In a normal year yes, but with no fans it won't really matter.

I hope it happens. It would be great for fans across the country and for the television broadcast networks.

Rogers will probably demand it, but are there 4 Canadian teams worth making the playoffs. Vancouver, Calgary, yes....Maybe Toronto.....maybe Edmonton........

So yes sire and mademoiselle. What does y'all think of the all canadian division next season they talkin bout no? We would play a whole lot of games versus only canadien teams. Interesting. Tsn is all over it. NHL looking at temporary realignment, short-term hubs for next season - TSN.ca

They talkin bout that and the whole short term hubs there also sire. What do the legendary toronto maple leafs fans think? Might be some hard games because think about the canadiens and ottawa rivalry. And the edm, calgary etc vanucks ones. Fighting and hitting no? Now we have the thugs also, with our current talent and young speedy gonzalez ones.

Temporary realignment...Maybe Bettman's supposed to tell us what to think...

Pro: Every night is grudge night. It will be great.

Con: Getting up at 5 am to work out after west coast games.

Bonus: Dog eat dog divisional playoffs against other Canadian cities should be epic

If they make a all Canadian division not all Canadian teams can make the Playoffs. All can make the playoffs potentially without the all Canadian format. That might be a beef for teams.

This is 100% true ... I am sure Matty will apply for a special CRA ruling using COVID as his basis if there is an all CDN division from Jan to July ... but if /leafs are out in June then he won't have to worry about it ... da real issue is what Leafs have to withhold for taxes but it will be a small consideration as I think he is paid in bonus money vs salary

As for the thread, I think we're probably the greatest lock to make the playoffs in an all-Canadian division, but I hope it's a short (48 game) season. Playing the same six teams more than eight times would be grating.

But it could become almost playoff like as bad blood builds up. Could be interesting, and definitely more interesting than playing Florida on a Tuesday in February.
