Everyone has their own likes but he is not close to top Canadian song writer IMO and likely most peoples opinions. Off the top of my head ones ahead of him include Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Peart, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Gord Downie to name a few.

I find a lot of those guys mentioned overrated personally. Like, Tragically Hip over Jean Leloup? Seriously? I find there's a gulf in creativity and originality between the two personally. Not big into Cohen or Young either.

I think Jean Leloup will always 'suffer' from being a francophone artist (so how many people in this thread even know of him really?) but it's not a difficult choice for me. I'm someone who usually doesn't give a hoot about rock lyrics but I think he's one of the best I ever read along with Lou Reed. Phenomenal writer.

Jean Leloup is great, but in my opinion, Daniel Bélanger takes the cake as best French-Canadian songwriter.
