After spending the last few months researching pre merger hockey and having the discussions here I think Nighbor 1917-18 is probably the best single season of the era. Leads the NHA in points and would have lead a consolidated league. Is the clear cut best defensive forward in the world. One of two times (Orr) that a player can be considered simultaneously the best offensive player and defensive player in the world. Taylor had some great seasons too, but that two way king is hard to overcome.

I've always looked at Beliveau 1956 as the best contender. Morenz 1928 and Hull 1966 and Jagr 1999 and Lafleur 1977 as HM. Obviously McDavid 2023 is opening up that debate.

To try and avoid the usual suspects, Dionne in 79-80 is nice. 137 points was 4th highest total ever only trailing Orr and Esposito. He beat peak Lafleur by 12 points and the in 3rd was Gilbert Perreault with 106, 31 points behind. With no rookie Gretzky this season looks alot more impressive.
