So, for me it’s probably that Crosby was somehow well above average or even good defensively in his early-mid 20s. Yes, now he’s somewhat capable of decent two-way performance (but not like the top 10 in the Selke voting), but it wasn’t true in his prime
It's honestly the worst and most pathetic form of history revision on these boards lol.

people who prorated states, try to reduce how good a player was or how good their stats were in an attempt to make a current player look better,

Posters posting about players they never saw play and making defining comments about them.

The idea that players from the 19__s (pick an era) didn’t do a particular thing (pick a skill) because they just weren’t smart or athletic enough to figure it out.

As if people who rose to the top of the ladder as professional athletes, spending their entire lives honing their skills in order to be the very best in the world, and then spending a decade or two doing it as a full-time job, were just a bunch of scrawny dumbasses.

--When people say that without the salary cap the teams with the most money won the Cup every year. While ignoring the literal last season without a cap and the two teams in the SCF that year. Or how the Rangers only won one Cup after 1940 and the Leafs won zero Cups since after 1967. Those two should have met in the SCF every year in the 70s, 80s, 90s, pre-lockout 00s -especially 90s into 00s- if the asinine takes on a NHL with no salary were even close to accurate.

--When people have horrible takes on the two-line offside pass: "but the dead puck era!" & "made everyone dump and chase" as if it was a new rule that only existed in the late 90s/early 00s and as if dump and chase forever ceased to exist starting in 2005.

--When people say, in reference to 90s/early 00s ESPN, that ESPN has always sucked at covering the NHL and has always hated the NHL. Coverage didn't fall off until ESPN got the NBA in 2002. In the 90s ESPN was great for NHL fans. 4-5 games a week on ESPN/espn2, at one point the excellent "NHL 2night" was on 6 nights a week. It got major league treatment on SC. But people act like they refused to show games, never had any shows, SC never showed HLs and the announcers were all clones of Leah Hextall on ESPN in the 90s and it's just a horrible take.

Mats Sundin being lionized as elite and generational.
Nobody ever thought Sundin was generational. Elite, however, he absolutely was at points. A few years in the top ten for goals and points, a couple post-season All Star selections in an era with very stiff competition at his position, and his International resume is unimpeachable.

Come on, some stats from Crosby's 20 to 25 yo period, pretty please.

Historical revisionism is awfully easy to do. Show us you aren't doing it first.

(Not saying you are. But it's such a buzzword nowadays. What does it even mean? The distorting of historic evidence hopefully is still a crime punishable by a drawing and quartering and then some. I'm looking at you, Mel Gibson in your Braveheart.)

That Bettman is somehow singularly responsible for the lockouts. The first collective actions by either side was a strike by the PA, which was prior to Bettman. It was a reason Bettman would get the job, but the PA was changing their leadership too. It was a war that was coming for a long time. Bettman didn't come in and say, you know, I'm not a hockey guy, so I'm just going to keep these guys from playing.

Or that he specifically doesn't care about Canadian teams, nevermind the Canadian Assistance Plan. Or that Vegas was given some special place in the NHL, when in 1967, after the league doubled in size with the stroke of a pen, the real hockey people in charge went on to guarantee a spot in the Final for one of the 6 terrible teams that would play during the 67-68 season. Or that the Bettman created Southeast division was an affront to the NHL's dignity, even though it would never sink to some of the lows that the fabled Norris division in the 80's would produce.

I referred to their primes discussion, where one of the usual points is that young Crosby brought substantially better two-way play than the others. I find it revisionist
It is completely revisionist. At the time, there was a fringe who thought Toews, who was never a top 10 scorer or gamebreaking offensive talent, was as good/better to build a franchise around compared to Crosby, Yes it was completely dumb and just a small fringe, but if Crosby was really as good defensively then as he's made out to be in retrospect, no way even that fringe gains any ground considering Crosby was a stratosphere above Toews offensively.

"Carey Price is an ok goaltender that didn't win anything", while forgetting what kind of super mediocre teams he had to carry on his back years after years

This is the team he had in front of him in 2014-2015, when he won everything

Not bad at all, but certainly not super stacked either (Prime Subban + Markov is a solid 1st pair, Prime Petry + Emelin is a solid second pair, Prime Patio-Ready, Prime Gallagher and Plekasex are all good, but it pretty much end there. This is in no way, shape or form, a team that could have hope to win it all)

Insane that through Carey’s Prime he had 1 80 point player. A real shame.

No one references the "dead puck era" as exclusively the era of dump and chase.

People reference the dead puck era as a time when the NHL went through a significant decline in goal scoring (which it did). The rule changes and equipment changes in the early oughts and 2010s caused scoring to tick back up.

"Vegas was gifted a Stanley Cup team"

Their first season was "is this the worst team ever?" & "They're going to be bad, the question is how bad" to "Vegas is on a hot start, when will they cool off" & "They'll still miss the playoffs" to "The rules were rigged for them to compete from the start"

This is a good one. Seemed like most people criticized their expansion draft at the time and thought they could have picked a much better team too.

Might want to read that again, since that's not what I said.

Regardless, I'll assume you've never been in a discussion about the two-line pass then. Always same responses; "play stopped 40 times a game for the offside pass," "but but but the dead puck era," & "dump and chase."

I watched most Penguins games since Crosby was 18.

Crosby has always been defensively responsible.

Much of his offense came from generating turnovers and creating off man rushes.
Yes, he’s always been relatively responsible, but would take chances as skilled players do…but he wouldn’t have been thought of as well above average and I don’t hear anyone suggest it either, so not sure where the earlier comment comes from. He’s discussed more on defence in recent years….I don’t hear people talk about how great he was in that area in his early 20s

The Sedin sisters

Come on people. These brothers were insanely talented, and took whatever beating came their way.
The Sedins were insanely hard to knock of the puck. Had work ethic and endurance second to none, and were extremely skilled and talented.

But yes, a lot of misinformed fans still call them the sisters.

Lamoriello was dumb enough to trade Toews away despite the islanders being hung up from Ladd, Bailey and Leddy's contracts.

Islanders fans hated Tavares because he went to Toronto and only because of that

Barzal is suddenly garbage once Trotz took over

You mention "dump and chase" repeatedly.

If your actual point is about the two-line pass, the conclusion is the same. No one is saying it caused the game to be exclusively dump and chase. But it did slow the game down and decrease scoring.

It's just the absolute lamest insult too. At least be more creative than a 1st grader. How much of a loser can someone be?

The backlash to the hype/media attention given to Toews during the Hawks cup years caused a lot of people to over-correct in the other direction and say some pretty silly shit. For example, "Toews was a passenger on those teams" or "Kane has always been the better player"
