What’s going on with Zegras?

He is at best going to be a Mike Ribeiro type guy - high end offense but soft and lazy. Unfortunately, he is looking to be worse than Mike, but he has a long career still left ahead.

A criminal?

Anyway, i wouldn't want that kind a player around my guys. While i do believe he could be effective in regular season, i wouldn't bet on him comes the playoffs. Unless you have above average size top 6 to surround him with.

Might be getting close to time for a 'change of scenery' type deal.

Obviously skilled player that might succeed more in a different environment.

He isn't lazy at all. Everything they've asked him to work on he's had a good attitude about and attempted to improve. Now, he is lacking still in strength and is often overpowered by other players and doesn't always succeed, whether it's offensively or defensively.

and he's a much better person than Ribeiro ever was. Zegs is apparently great to all the team staff and people who work at the arena. you aren't probably comparing their personalities but Ribeiro's personality is kind of inherent in any comparison with him. he isn't who comes to mind for me.

Eh, I think in the right situation he coulda hit EP sorta peaks, but obviously that hype train has run into its own issues.

But ya, I think he was allowed to free wheel a bit, then got asked to play an all-around game and has just struggled with both aspects since. He was hurt last year, but the production has been decreasing regardless. Hope he can turn it around, fun player and it’d be a cool example of how you can “skill it up” and still do all the requisite little things.
The difference being EP is actually a 2-way player so even when he's not scoring he's not a net negative out there, just overpaid. Zegras is purely one dimensional. Maybe they should try moving him to the wing?

He’s mostly been playing wing all season, he looks much more comfortable at center… yesterday was his first game at center

The top end players seem to do better. Gifted top line and top PP must help the motivation. That and the team will get them help.

It's the depth players that seem to struggle. Bunch of players that could/should be effective 2nd line player just fall off the development curve.
As long as the top end guys are mature. It's always hardest on the early draft picks of the rebuild as they endure the most losing. Have to be mature enough to work on your game despite putting up points on a bad team. At some point, the results of the games will matter and you don't want to be the one giving up cheap goals because you didn't learn to play a more complete game.

Zegras was the first guy they drafted since they started missing the PO in 2019. Drysdale, Tracey, Perreault from the 2019/2020 drafts in round 1 are already gone from the franchise.

It's not just zegras. Cronin has sucked the creativity out of all our young players.
Then that's on Verbeek as Cronin was his hire.

Won’t find anyone disagreeing with any of this.

As for Cronin, 100% on verbeek…. And it’s clearly an issue, no structure on offense or defense or special teams.

I think Anaheim needs to go with a vet coach, that can get the room… cause right now Cronin looks as lost as the team looks trying to play his system

Classic case of a "somebody has to score the points" guy on a truly awful team (see Granlund in SJS)

He's in a weird spot with Anaheim where they have enough better players to prevent him from getting the usage he did his first couple of seasons but also nowhere near enough that they can give him a more manageable/sheltered role as an offensive 3c. Think he could probably do a good job for a contender there but not Anaheim

I mean it's just infuriating that the same Kings team that made the Ducks look like they have no idea how to play hockey lost to an SJ team that was on the back end of back to backs last night.

Yea, I'm certainly not comparing their personalities. Zegras seems like a good cali kid who just can't make his skills work to their full potential. Lazy is used in the context of not grinding enough on the boards and working hard enough on the backcheck and defensive refinement of his game to be a two way guy.
