He was never that good. Hugely overhyped on HF. The book is out on him and players have figured out how to stop him. He could probably succeed in the right situation but he was never going to be a superstar.

Eh, I think in the right situation he coulda hit EP sorta peaks, but obviously that hype train has run into its own issues.

But ya, I think he was allowed to free wheel a bit, then got asked to play an all-around game and has just struggled with both aspects since. He was hurt last year, but the production has been decreasing regardless. Hope he can turn it around, fun player and it’d be a cool example of how you can “skill it up” and still do all the requisite little things.

People thought doing a couple Michigan goals meant he was a superstar in the making. It was just a pretty goal.

Doesn't go to hard areas. Not very strong both in his upper body and on his skates. Doesn't really have a good one-timer nor a plus wrist shot. It's possible he could figure things out, but I'm sure it's hard to swim against the tide of folks who want him to constantly demonstrate his puck-handling and trick-shot skills. That's how he got a lot of sponsorship money and I'm sure his agent wants him to play that up as much as he can.

He got points early in his career because he was given scoring minutes under the assumption the rest of his game would improve. It didn’t so those minutes and chances have died down as more is expected of him now.

A lot of high draft picks have their best seasons early for this reason. He’s a liability in many ways and his game has not grown. I’m not sure where it goes from here honestly but I like to think he grows a bit

Zegras is playing on a Ducks team that isn't going anywhere anytime soon, so whatever he does or doesn't do really has no effect on anything so long as he avoids injury. The checks will clear either way. So why not just kick back and enjoy the Newport Beach lifestyle and not overly exert yourself to no meaningful purpose?

Would love to have him in Vegas.

Do you see who’s coaching him?

Coming back from an injury and a shit coach will do that to you!

I hate Greg Cronin
While I agree Cronin isn’t a great coach, Dallas Eakins who was TZs coach those prior years isn’t exactly Scotty Bowman neither. Cronin=Eakins

This is more on the player than coaching.

I think he’s just going through some growing pains on a terrible team, and will bounce back eventually. But please unload him and send him to NY.

I think at the macro-level Cronin is indeed a big problem. For me, it looks like Zegs is lacking confidence at this time.

There are still things he can improve on though for sure. For one, his strength, specifically upper body, isn't adequate. He has absolutely zero physical presence on the ice, incredibly easy to move him off pucks and he has no ability to push defenders off pucks or move anybody out of his path

I don’t agree with that. I think Anaheim are a year away from competing for a playoff spot. If they can somehow get their offense going a bit this year, they can probably already still be in the mix in Feb-March
