Pretty sad to have those thoughts after one game, but also completely understandable. That was so eerily similar to the last several seasons. Looks like absolutely nothing has changed.
This.

Our players were all over the ice, out of position most of the time (I think, because I sure don't hope this is intended). I can't believe how often there was a Flyer in our slot with no Devil around him. Absolutely embarrassing, this can't happen. It's like we learned nothing after last season.

There needs to be a big reaction against Detroit.

The worrying thing for me is that these guys just look so deflated. They never seem to be having fun out there.

They all look like their puppies got stomped on.

They never seem to be “up for it”. Again, this is Lindy Ruff energy to me. Your goalie giving up back breakers constantly sure doesn’t help either.

Ruff obviously has an issue with Bratts game. Ruff is also very obviously inept at realizing who his horses SHOULD be. I'm convinced he's rather an entire roster full of Wood-McLeod-Bastian types than having guys like Bratt. Having said all of that I can't imagine what it's like being a pro and knowing your goalie is probably going to let in a bad goal that just sucks the life out of the team. One game though, not a big deal. Beat Detroit and it's fine.

This is what we get for running our mouths about being a playoff/bubble team and being better than Ottawa, Detroit, Buffalo and such. Embarrased and humbled. Almost everyone outside had us finishing at the bottom, while we in our homeristic bubble somehow think we can get 40 points more with adding Vanecek, Palat, Haula and B. Smith and getting rid of two assistant coaches (from which one was responsible for the only decent thing last season, the PK). Maybe it's impossible to get everyone (or most) to play up to their potential, or maybe we've overrated the potential of our players.

It's just one game, but it's still the same system and mostly same players. Everything looked terrible last night, offense, defence and goaltending. So unless this is a major wake up (shake up?) call, it doesn't look good. I'd lower the expectations and accept that we suck, until we don't (if and whenever that happens). I just hope we aren't out of it before christmas break.

Exactly the point i was trying to make earlier this week when people on this board talk about Nico, Jack and Jesper as if they are currently some kind of dominating star players that can carry a team if needed.

They arent there yet (and Nico didnt even play). What this team needs is structure, simple game philosophy especially in the defensive end. We've got a good thing going but we did not play with our strenghts last night. And we have still a big problem between the pipes.

Amazing that some people want to insist this is just another game and not indicative of anything. This isn’t a team of grizzled vets who have proven themselves in this league and are basically a lock to win a lot of games. This is a team of young guys, who are supposed to be hungry and eager to prove that they’ve grown and turned a corner from the last several years…

…and they come out and lay a f***ing egg in the season opener against the second least talented team in the league? Even if you want to say a competent goalie would have gotten them a tie in regulation…this was still a garbage uninspired mediocre effort. It’s clearly indicative of something that ain’t good or even neutral.

It was a bad game. Not good enough against a shitty team like that. Still, it’s 1 of 82. Let’s get Nico back and put a real NHL goalie in net. You very rarely win on an “off” night with horrible goaltending.

It's one game. If it turns into 4, 5, 6 games I'll start to worry.
Why don’t you get your worries in now? It’s not going to get any better. It’s not that they sucked last night, it’s that they sucked in the exact same ways as they have under Ruff. We play pond hockey with no structure. This organization is rotten from the very top, we’ll be out of it by Christmas again and they’ll fire Ruff way too late.

Yeah people are using it to spin takes on whatever agenda they want

If we won we'd be singing a different tune instead of "Bratt won't re-sign here" or "shoot blackwood into the sun" (kinda agree w that one a bit tho, this game aside)
Well, yeah, what would the expectation be? If they lose (as they have for years) people are going to be salty. If they win, it will be a refreshing change and people will be (mostly) happy.

I’m pretty sure that how this whole thing works. :)

Well shit. The season's already over? Guess I can cancel my streaming services. Thanks for the heads up.

What has this team done that would instill any kind of confidence that this is just a one game thing? It’s not…they had a chance to show that things are different this year right out of the gate and they couldn’t even accomplish the simple task of looking respectable in their own end against an AHL lineup.

I will gladly bookmark all these posts of mine and mock myself for eternity if they prove me wrong.

Your entire premise doesn’t even make sense. “What has this team done…?” Well “this team” has played one game, so there’s that.

And if they beat up on the Flyers it would’ve been “well they suck, haven’t proved anything, do it against a good team”.

I'm usually very patient with this team and the rebuild, but there's just no excuse for a performance like that against a team as weak as Philadelphia. Blame the goaltending all you want, but they were outcompeted in a game where they should have spent 75% of the time in the Flyers' zone.

It's going to get late early here and a team like the Devils can't afford to start slow and dig themselves a hole in the first month again. The season will be over by thanksgiving for the 9th time this decade if they throw up more performances like that.

A coach like Tortorella would have had them ready to go and this wouldn't be a concern. Lindy Ruff is not the guy. Who gives a shit if Jack likes him.

I thought I accidentally watched a game from last season. Getting the lead and giving it up seconds later with the help of our goalie, giving the game away in period two, not being able to come back from a two goal deficit, a power play with hardly any movement at all, allowing odd men rushes again and again, shooting from too far out with nobody in from of Hart and on and on and on.

The personnel changes but the on ice product stays the same. How can this be? Bratt got less playing time than six other forwards. Why ist this? Lindy reacted harshly when asked about Bratt's ice time. The guy is definitely on a short leash, Ruff that is. If this doesn't improve drastically and soon, he should be gone. This is not a well coached team at all and it hasn't been for a long time.
