Pre-Game Talk: Week of We Talkin' 'Bout Practice, Man...

I’m in meetings, can somebody confirm something for me?

MacKinnon
Makar
Toews
Nichushkin
Drouin
Lehkonen
Lindgren
Manson
Colton
Landeskog

All participants today with normal jerseys? No non-contact jerseys?

Not that I've seen from pictures/videos or reported. Then again, this was an optional practice with no coaches out there (aside from Parkkila). I don't know how much a no-contact jersey is necessary for a session like that.

I guess we have to wait a day, hopefully full practice tomorrow.

Ferraro said Bednar was planning to have 3 practices during this week before the playoffs start. We'll be lucky to have 2.

Every single player at today’s optional practice other than Erik Johnson.

That’s 15 F + 7 D + 2 G.

EJ’s stuff stayed hanging in the room.

I guess we probably might as well start to talk about Landeskog in regular threads, instead of a dedicated one. I think that one has served its purpose.

Bednar is going to be mysterious about whether or not Landy will be playing since it's the playoffs. He'll be in game 1 no doubt.

Agreed, he’s ready to go.

No signs of pain, played B2B, full week of practice with the team.

I’m excited to see what line he is on. We all assume 3rd but never know with Bednar and his top guys.

I think it's really about whether or not Landeskog is fit enough to really help the team on ice. You are going to have to sit a guy that you would probably like in the lineup.

I’m intrigued to see what we do with our lines, assuming everyone is healthy and Gabe is back. We have a wide range of weapons to play various teams and adapt. If we need weight we have players like Vesey and Wood over Kelly and Kivi. I think we go with lines of:

Lehkonen-MacKinnon-Necas
Drouin-Nelson-Nichuskin
Landeskog-Coyle-Colton
Kivi-Drury-LOC
this was not our most effective top6 down the stretch IMO. Bednar kept wanting it to be but it was struggling

Basically swap 29 and 11 and of course we know Mac is always the top line

Gabe on the third line makes sense for a lot of reasons. Keeping the 4th line in tact is one of them.

When Bedsy likes a line, especially a 4th line, he tends to keep them together in the playoffs.

Also for those reasons, I wonder if Kelly replaces Kivi. For the bulk of the season Kivi was better, but I think you gotta evaluate recent play more, and Kelly has outplayed him the last month or so.

Kelly also fits the identity of that 4th line better, if they're trying to re-create a Cogs-Helm-LOC forechecking line. Kelly plays the Cogs role fairly well. More tenacious in his puck hounding and with a bit more physicality.

Is he capable? Skills wise and game IQ absolutely. Someone said he skated harder in his second game than his first which I was happy to hear. My only concern is with his stamina in the SC POs. That’s really the ultimate test for him so here goes. But the value in supercharging the team’s morale and providing leadership is just as important.

I had said it before, but we shouldn't be surprised or alarmed if Kiviranta steps in for him sometimes and he doesn't play every game. Playoff hockey every second night can be grueling. We shouldn't take it as a setback, rather a lack of game fitness which is to be expected after almost 3 years off.

Hard to decide between Kiviranta and Kelly. Both guys go balls to the wall every shift, both guys are tenacious on the forecheck, both guys kill penalties.

If Bednar had some major balls on him he'd sit Colton instead of those two.

Coltons been fine since he's been next to Coyle imo. He's had 9pts in those 15/16 ngames And he offers a much higher ceiling than Kelly and Kivi imo. But that's just me.

I just hope Colton and Lehky can turn on the scoring in the POs. For the rest of the team, just shoot the puck at the net. Don’t try to get too cute with excessive passing.
