Pre-Game Talk: Week of Regular Season End (Tue vs. VGK, Thu vs. VAN, Sat @ LAK, Sun @ ANA)

Who will be our 1st round playoff opponent?

Nathan MacKinnon is our leading forward in scoring with 116 points.
At second place is Artturi Lehkonen with 44 points.

EDIT: Nelson has 54 points if you count in the NYI games.
And Necas has 81 points if you count in the CAR games.

It's kind of crazy MacKinnon leads the league in points and is shooting at 10.0%.

He has the worst shooting percentage of the top 75 forward point leaders in the NHL. Celebrini at 9.5% is 75th in the league in points.

MacK also leads the entire league in shots at 320. Wild. 320 shots with a 10% goal rate. No wonder he has regressed from 51 goals last year to just 32 this season. Last year he was at 12.6%. That would be over 40 goals this season with his shot total.

Why do you guys think this is?

Bad luck? Poor shot selections? I notice he throws a ton of weak ass floaters from the perimeter on goal instead of driving the net for high percentage chances like he used to do.

My perception was MacKinnon has always appeared to be a high-volume, lowish shooting percentage kind of player for majority of his NHL career.

Just looked, and in the cup season he shot 10.7% for the RS. Last season was his 2nd best S% of his career at 12.6%. Most top scorers are consistently above him.

In addition to random variation, there are probably some under the radar reasons leading to a bit of ebb and flow. Perhaps he was simply putting in more shooting practice in the past. Maybe something he is doing currently to improve his faceoffs has hurt his accuracy at least temporarily. Maybe something in his mindset as to when to shoot vs pass. I thought perhaps it was TOI related, but that doesn't seem to correlate real well looking at the full season numbers.

It's actually Rantanen with 64 points for the Aves

I hate the floaters he throws at the net. More often than not it doesn't even look like he is trying to create a rebound, just putting it on net for the hell of it.

One of the few things I hate about his game that he has incorporated the last few years. Guess it's better than the seemingly endless buttonhooks from 2013-2017, though.

I'll take Mack's buttonhooks anytime before his stupid backhand and forced passes on the PP. They are maddening. I bet Mack would have an extra 10 pts at least on the PP if he would be way more selective with those passes. His buttonhooks very often actually open up passing lanes to the trailers.

Mackinnon the most elite perimeter player in the game.

Why do people think we’re withholding information? No one is on the trip except Altitude and they won’t give us the info. Talk to McGahey who asked Bednar about the forwards but didn’t ask anything about G.
No one is giving information, especially at this time of the year. You’re assuming no one has tried, which is a false assumption.

I know Sammy has been skating with the team, but I didn't hear anyone ask about Girard in the pre or post game media scrum for the Vegas home game.

Two people asked about Colton in the post game though. Asked if he was injured or precautionary, and the second asked whether he was D2D and if it was upper body, which Bednar replied that he was injured, he was D2D, and it was upper body.

If you don't want to ask for that kind of detail, any chance we can just ask, "Is there any update on Girard" please? It really is something that the fans would like to know, even if they don't need all the details.

Because we got an update on Monday morning. He skated with the team for 25 minutes and they’re hoping he can play before the regular season ends.

Just checking in to say I'm coasting through these pretty meaningless end-of-season Avs games before the playoffs, while investing more energy to my hometown club KalPa who advanced to the Liiga semi's yesterday and the buzz over here is pretty electric. They've never won it all, and there's a pretty good chance this spring. That being said, if I had to choose one club over the other, I'd take Avs 10 times outta 10. They are my true hockey club since 95-96 when I instantly fell in love with the franchise, all the way from Finland.

And we will again conquer all come playoff time!!

Not really considering I intentionally left him out because he's not part of the team.
But separating Nelsons and Necas points is fine because... they are a part of the team?

Factually Rantanen has scored the 2nd most points of any forward for the Avalanche this season. That is an undisputed fact regardless of whether he is on the team currently or not.

Shut him down if there's absolutely anything bothering him.

He's not going to beat Kucherov for the Art Ross, that ship has sailed. Kuch has a game in hand and plays shitters like Buffalo, Detroit, and the Rangers. It's over.

You specifically made a point to separate out Nelson's & Necas's point totals from NYI/CAR, so I'd say yeah, someone bringing up Mikko's points up until his trade to Carolina fits within the perspective you were painting with.
Nelson and Necas are playing for us, that is why they can contribute depth behind MacKinnon in the playoff games to come. I did forget that Nelson and Necas put up good numbers in their old teams and should have been up there with Lehkonen.

Honestly, sit f***ing everyone. I still have PTSD flashbacks of Patrick Roy playing the entire lineup in a meaningless last game of the season and Jan Hejda broke his finger and sucked in the postseason because of it.

Call the entire Eagles team up, they can play. Jokes on you Landeskog - you thought you were safe getting some AHL time?
