Obviously its a small sample size and it will probably regress a little bit... But it really does go to show that the defense wasn't the problem, it was purely dogshit goaltending.

Now, that's not to say the defense could have been better and still could be better, I think we're still prone to too many lapses in judgement, carelessness with the puck(Looking at you specifically Mack and Mikko), and these mistakes do lead to an above average number of high danger chances against.... But overall the team is still clearly good defensively and capable of playing well in their own zone.

But when you literally dont trust your goalies to make even the most routine saves, you play defense entirely different, basically afraid to even make a single mistake... which more often then not results in making more mistakes essentially.

It's very nice to see good goaltending again and see the GAA trending downward.

Goaltending got better but we played a total of:

*check notes*

0 team that's currently sitting in a playoff spot since we trade for Blackwood and 1 since we traded for Wedgewood (Devils).

In other words, the Avs have played only dogshit teams in the last 7 games, the best team they faced was Vancouver and they lost (and it wasn't pretty).

But at least we are now winning the games we are supposed to win. Soon we'll know where this team places compared to the better teams.

11 games since the Wedgewood deal the Avs have given up 8 or less high danger chances in 7 of those games.

If that keeps up, the goaltending will hold up and the Avs will start beating playoff teams, too.

They still need a couple of bottom six forwards IMO to push Smith/Wagner/Ivan to the AHL full time and Kiviranta/O'Connor/Kelly to the 4th line but I think that comes in time.

That Vancouver game really pissed me off, but were they still battling the flu? Likely..

I think we'll have games where the top of the roster is cold, and we look like we did against Vancouver.

However the NJ game was a clinic irrc, and we've had a few of those against good teams. They still tend to dial it up against better teams. There is life, but they're going to be inconsistent until they find a way to add that depth.

Thank God for *somewhat sane goaltenders

As of today the Avs are 8-9-0 against currently listed playoff teams. Overall in those games at 5v5:

Scoring Chances For: 402
Scoring Chances Against: 312

High Danger Chances For: 158
High Danger Chances Against: 120

xGF: 35.36
xGA: 31.00

Actual Goals Scored: 32
Actual Goals Against: 41

The numbers paint the picture of a team that hasn't actually played against playoff teams all that poorly despite a below .500 record. They've out-chanced both regular and high danger these playoff teams for the most part and have been done-in by poor goaltending.

Now that the goaltending seems to have been rectified, let's see if the Avs can get on a roll.

I'm not a stat guy by any means, but one simple thing you can clearly see since the goaltending change is the games consistently holding the other team to two goals are all wins, Vancouver is the only loss at 1-3.

Yeah it mattered lol
