Second question... when he talks about "partly because of our location"... what is he talking about? Is he literally calling out the fact that practice facility is so damn far away it's just not convienent?
I have no idea what a "double optional" practice is (two optional practices in a row? only come if you have a weird hockey superstition about needing to practice on a certain day?), but I think I can explain the travel. Western Conference teams travel way more than Eastern teams and the Avs probably more than most. Teams usually don't practice if they get home or to the hotel after 1 or 2 am or something like that.

I remember in a previous season when the Avs had a long homestand that was relatively sparse with games That Bednar said it's good to finally have this window where we can have serious practices that we can work on targeted things.

Interesting how Necas says he’s never played on a team at any level where you can have optional practices.

Welcome to the Bednar show, Marty.

If you don’t want to practice; don’t practice. Nobody cares!
Hey we all complain about ice time, maybe not practicing is why Bednar thinks that's okay.

Well to be fair Bednar believes in star players playing 28 min/game for 82 regular season games and #1 goalie starting 70 regular games per season.

Least he can do is optional practices.

I think it's when both off ice and on ice stuff is optional.
That... that makes a lot of sense. Didn't think of it as just not skating... I always assumed optional meant the whole day was off and didn't realize that they could still be driving in to do video and weights or what not.

In a crazy sense I was right. A double optional should make them 2X refreshed.

Bednar's basically said that. They don't detail full day off vs staff availability for the players & open ice vs practice well externally but would need to internally.

If the skate is optional, I don't necessarily believe it's a day off. There is probably staff availability and video at a certain time.

That pretty much explains the lackluster effort in some games

I figured they just had a team lunch at In n Out, and they had to decide whether to get their double cheeseburger animal style or not. :dunno:
Not going to lie. I got stuck on a fast attack submarine. That means one boat... one crew.

The boomers on the other hand... one boat, two crews. Those boats are always at sea on deployment so one crew goes out for six months, comes home and the other crew goes out on the boat for six months. Anyways, if you are a sailor stationed to a submarine that is at sea and you are on land... there's just not a hell of a lot to do. It would not be uncommon for LPO's to go to McDonalds... grab the both right next to the drive through window and check their crew off on the morning muster as they drove through getting a morning cup of coffee. That was it. They had to check in and some departments made it as easy as hell.

Also heard that it was easier for two guys to keep the same woman happy or some such. There was always chatter about the blue crew keeping the gold crew's wife company and vice versa.

I believe that's called Filthy Animal Style. It's off menu for sailors.
